I'm with you on the lack of sleep... but mine is due to work and not a puppy. I would recommend getting a small wire crate to keep the puppy in, instead of a box. That way he can see you while you are sleeping (or trying to sleep). A crate is the best training tool you can have with a puppy. I would also just let him whine. If he has already gone potty, then you need to stick it out and let him whine til he stops, otherwise he will learn and he will learn quickly, that you will pick him up everytime he whines. I had this problem with one of my dogs and it only took a couple of days and this behavior stopped. I hope this helps!

I went through this not too long ago! My puppy is only 6 months old! I too recommend a crate. I would take him out before you go to bed and I would also put a radio next to his crate on very softly (mellow music). When he would cry I would get up every 2 hours to see if he had to go, I didnt want his messing his crate. Then after a few days he would only wimper after about 5-6 hours so I would take him out then. After about a week of that he was sleeping though the night.

I would use the crate during the day. If you cant watch him he is safer in the crate. My vet told me a young puppy needs to go out after playing, napping or every 2 hours if awake. We had a few accidents but now my puppy is doing great!

Since my puppy is small and will stay small as an adult. We bought a pet carrier to use as a crate. It is small, portable, has great ventilation, and it looks nice too. Super Pets sells them.

I would also recommend taking your puppy outside to go and not to train him on the paper, that might make it harder to train in the long run.

    Good Luck!

I ditto the crate training method, it's really the easiest way to housebreak and it really makes your life easier (and cleaner too ). One thing I did when my puppy was so young was to wear an old t-shirt for a few hours and then take it off, place it in the crate as part of the bedding for my pup. She loved it having my scent on it and cried a lot less after that. I also put a stuffed animal in the crate with her, she curled up with that like a sibling. She only cried for about 3 nights and she was barely 6 wks. old when we got her. She still sleeps in her crate every night, right near my side of the bed. She happily goes in there every evening, waits for her little treat and settles in for the night. Good luck with housebreaking....man it's a lot of work and it takes about 6 months to 'get it done'. But if you're patient and persistent you'll have the best friend you could imagine.
