Cleaning oven racks

I read this in a Heloise book years ago. I have tried it and it really works.

Put your racks in a LARGE garbage bag. Pour in one cup of ammonia. Leave it overnite somewhere it cannot be disturbed. The next morning all that baked on gunk will come right off. Oh, be sure to close the opening of the bag really well. Tie it in a knot or use a twister seal.

That is a great idea. One of the things that I have done in the past is I put the racks into the bathtub fill it with water until they are coverd and then add some liquid fabric softner and let it sit over night. The racks will come clean very easy. The fabric softner trick works on any kind of hard to scrub pots,pans and other items.

I spray mine with oven cleaner, put them in a bag, seal it up and let sit over night. Then I wipe them clean in the morning

I use oven cleaner on my drip pans as well

I have a self cleaning oven and I know you aren't supposed to leave the racks in while cleaning, but I always do and they always come out looking great.

I have cleaned my racks this way for years. My fil taught me this and oh how easy it is! I used to dig out the SOS, drag my rubber gloves on and scrub forever.
As far as leaving the racks in a self cleaning oven, I wouldn't recommend it. It takes the chrome finish right off them leaving them a dull grey.
