Any of your Walmarts?
cutting out their craft departments.
they are shutting down the crafts and automotive departments here.
this has been told to us by people in at least 3 different walmarts here.
Hope Kmart takes advantage and brings back the crafts....
(first lawayays now this )

I've not seen this at all. At least not at the Super WM. I haven't been to the regular WM enough to notice. Not that either of their craft departments are much to get excited about.
Our Kmart does have a small craft section, with several differnt kinds of yarns, crochet hooks, needles, etc. Not as big as WM's, but better than the nothing they used to have.

i have heard this, but it hasn't happened here yet. supposedly they're trying to appeal to a higher class and compete with target. so theyve supposedly brought in higher quality merchandise with higher prices and doing away with automotives and sporting goods and such. sounds like wm is going down the tubes if you ask me.

Yes, I've heard the same thing. I'm in a lot of sewing and quilting groups and they are all up in arms about them getting rid of the fabric. It's supposed to happen gradually within the next few years, from what I've heard.

I read on my quilting forum at about.com that Walmart will be phasing out their fabric dept. over the next few years. Bad for beginners who don't want to spend an arm and a leg for fabric to learn how to quilt.

Our new Super Wal-mart has a VERY small fabric/crafts section. Like, 2 small aisles.

we have a 'newish' super walmart (it's been open less than a year) and it has a very nice size craft dept - that's just sad -- just one more reason to not shop there -- they will only shoot themselves in the foot in my opinion

Our "upscale Walmart" -- I know that sounds crazy but it's the location -- has dropped almost all their fabric, but the one close to me in a less fashionable part of town still has an ok fabric selection. In fact, when I was in there today, there were some markdowns that I couldn't pass by (paint me embarrassed). It would actually be better for my budget if they did close it out! JoAnn's is far out of my way, so I have to actually plan to go there and can usually talk myself out of it by the time I can get around to the trip.

~NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The nearest fabric store is a 40 minute drive and twice as expensive! I went into a Walmart a few years back that was in a Hispanic community. They had OODLES of fabric and much of it was $1 yard. I thought that was veeeeeeery interesting.~

I haven't heard of this. We have a new super wm in a town close to us and they have a pretty good size section of crafts and fabric. However, lately I have seen all the commerical about wm and they are not pretty. I think people are getting tired of the way the treat their help and the low pay. I think people are going back to the mom and pop shops in their hometowns. I guess people are really getting tired of big business and the working middle class are the ones paying for it...

I haven't heard this althought I am not suprised. The new Swm near us has a terrible craft section--I have no problem avoiding it! There is also a reg wm about 20min away, it has a great craft section. But...a friend of ours who worked in the craft section since the day it opened just got fired before Christmas. It was a really shakey reason so now I wonder if it was just an excuse to start cutting back--they haven't replaced her.
