i got grain to the horses
picked up extra animal food
picked up extra stuff for here
filled the truck with gas

the problem is we are all electric adn if we loose power we loose heat
i also moved the grill into the garage area so at least we can cook

I'm in Nebraska too, I'm hoping that this storm just decides to pass us by. Some people in NE are still without power from that storm we had over New Years. Dh works for the railroad and he got stuck out of town for 5 days at New Years. We are just a few miles from Offutt AFB...what part of NE are you in Favesis?

The first thing that comes to mind is buy a generator...it sure does make me feel secure having it as well as a couple of 10 gallon containers filled with gas..

Ahhh those lovely NE winters. I don't miss em'! I would say make sure you have plenty of staples in the house along with a couple gal. of water incase. Make sure you have bread and some lunchmeat. I think a couple cans of sterno might be a good idea too. Oh Candles, don't forget candles.Well, just in case. It is supossed to start hitting us here with ice Fri eve. Ick! Well it is winter after all.

I also vote buying a generator if you can afford one. We bought one and I tell you it is a good piece of mind. I know they are not cheap bt it comes in handy that is for sure.
Do you have bottled water? Make sure that you have plenty of blankets on hand and warm clothes are all washed so if you need them you have them. I hope you don't need any of it.
Does your grill have a side burner? That will help in making soups, coca and things to keep you warm.
Good luck I hope that it doesn't happen. In my neck of the woods in Ohio we haven't had any snow but a few stray flurries. Which is strange for this time of year.

Yikes! I hope you make out all right! I heard 5000 Nebraska residents are still without power from the first one! Make sure your propane tanks are all filled for the grill. Got any solar yard lights stored in the garage for winter? You can put them out in the day to charge up and then bring them in at night. Good luck and take care!

Always had wood or gas for heat, but my uncle always keeps a Kerosene heater in case of the power going out.
Sending good thoughts and prayers your way.

It is suppose to get bad here starting tomorrow and continuing through the weekend. I hope it misses all of us and none of us have this yucky weather to contend with.
Stay warm and stay safe frugal sisters.

Yeah they're telling us to expect lots of ice....sigh. I sure hope it's not a repeat of weekend before last. We were without power for 3 days. I shouldn't gripe b/c there were about 1000 people near us without for 11 days.
I'm going to the store tomorrow morning and will stock up on things like milk, bread and stuff like that. I'm going to pour up water from our tap filter to have on hand as well. Don't want to be without water.....

Hi
I was just wondering how much a small generator cost? I have no clue as to how much they cost. I am in New England but sometimes in the summer we have crazy storms. We have had a mild winter so far.

Besides everything the other ladies have said:
If by chance you do loose power, choose a room to stay in if you can and block all others off either close doors or put up blankets to help maintain heat.
You can fill your bathtub with water to flush the toilet.
Don't forget to open the cabinet doors under sinks, this will help your pipes from freezing. If you aren't on a well, you can also leave the water on a trickle so your pipes don't freeze.
If you have a way to heat water (before the storm hits if you need to) Boil lots of water and use your cooler to keep it hot. I have done this and it stays hot for many days. Just add cold water when you use some.
Make sure you and hubby (and anyone else) have plenty of you medications on hand. If it ices, you never know how long it may take to get out.
If I think of any others I'll post again.~~ Dee ~~

Carbon Monoxide-It kills....
Favesis and others,
Please be careful in the use of your grills and generators. If you are going to use your grill in the garage, please open a door and a window to get some cross ventilation. You can get toxic levels of carbon monoxide in a matter of minutes.
Also, please be sure to do the same for generators. It's actually best to keep those outside and away from the house if possible. Also, be sure the generator is cooled off before adding more fuel.
Early signs of CO poisoning-bad headache, confusion, fatigue, etc. Also, remember it's a colorless, odorless gas. Please be careful! Good luck and I hope you get through this storm okay.Last edited by became4347; 01-11-2007 at 07:13 PM.
