    Default "what to do?" question

    we live in a total electric house and living here in oklahoma we hardly ever get weather like theyre predicting, so we dont have a generator or anything. if it ices as bad as they say, we wont be able to travel to my mothers house(who does have a generator and some gas powered appliances) if our electricity does happen to go out. how would you handle the situation? no generator, no fireplace-nothing!

    Would your mom mind early guests for the weekend?
    “When you get to the end of all the light you know
    and it's time to step into the darkness of the unknown,
    faith is knowing that one of two things will happen:
    you will be given something solid to stand on,
    or you will be taught how to fly.” - Edward Teller

    “Our Earth is degenerate in these later days;
    there are signs that the world is speedily
    coming to an end;
    bribery and corruption are common; children no
    longer obey their parents;
    every man wants to write a book and the
    end of the world is evidently approaching.”
    — From a translation of an inscription on
    an Assyrian clay tablet, circa 2800 B.C.E.

    God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
    courage to change the things I can,
    and the wisdom to know the difference

    Stock up on candles, camp stove and do you have a fireplace? Personally, I would head to the nearest Hilton, but I'm not good at roughing it.

    We have all electric, and live in hurricane country. We do have a generator. Do you have a kerosene heater, lamp, etc... You could use that for heat.

    Around here it is just the opposite, if we lose electric, we are too hot.

    Good luck!

    We also just had the big power outage and now we have the snow and ice. We do have a generator though. I too would check if you can go to moms early and I also would see if she has room in her freezer to hold some of your more expensive items.
    If that isn't possible they were saying here that frozen food will last about 2 days in the freezer. Do you have a BBQ? Propane or charcoal? I would try and think of things that cook quickly on the BBQ. We had candles but no lighter! Also had flashlights but batteries not so much. I would try and keep the house warm and shut all doors and keep the heat up in the living room before the power goes.
    Find games that everyone enjoys and books. Please stay safe and you will be amazed how blessed you feel when the power does come back on!

    We had a severe ice storm here about 4 yrs ago. We do have a fireplace so we bundled up in the family room and used body heat/fireplace for warmth. As far as food goes - the freezer was fine, it is out in the garage and as long as the temp stayed below freezing the food was still frozen solid two days later. The food in the frig I put in a cooler and set it out on the front porch - it did not get above freezing for four days and we had power by then.
    If you are not on a city water system - fill up bathtub and many containers with drinking water. A camping grill is a wonderful thing to have - heat soups, water, etc. There are these wonderful coleman battery lamps that give off an extremely huge amount of light.

    Good luck, BTDT

    I can relate. I am outside of Wichita Falls and we are having the same weather. Our entire deck (our entry into and out of our house) is a solid sheet of ice, I went out earlier and tossed salt on it so hopefully that will keep it from being inpassable. I am working tonight but DH is driving me in and picking me up in the morning, I normally won't let him bother but with this ice storm I am making an exception. Egads, I hate this weather .

    I hope you can get to your Mom's and ride out the storm there. Stay safe and warm my Village friend.

    I'd headed to mom's with my extra supplies. Also don't forget your birth control as most baby booms happen 9 monthes after storms like this!

    Add me to the "head to mom's early" group.

    Having been through two ice storms, the last one with all electric...it SUCKS. It's much better when you have a little heat & a little light. It gets depressing having day after day of no light and freezing your butt off. Not even having warm food or coffee to eat.

    We were just without power for 3 days and nights. What we did was shut off all the rooms but the living room, stayed in here, layered and bundled up. We poured up water before hand b/c we could see we might be without (be sure to have extra to flush the toilets with). You can survive without heat, but it's not a lot of fun. Oh and one more thing...if the electricity goes out, let your faucets run a tiny stream of water and open the cabinet doors to keep the pipes from bursting. Get the gloves and hats and blankets out....if you lose power you'll need em.

    well i didn't make it to my mothers early as i had to take my son to the dr. and then wait in line for his prescription. he has pink eye! just dandy. so i guess we'll ride out the storm here and hope for the best. not to mention i have 5 one week old weenie puppies in the house keeping warm. cant run off and leave them here. well i guess i could, but the momma will have eaten me out of the house by the time we got back.
