MY VACUUM DIED...
Good grief...I was vacuuming away and all of the sudden this really loud, scarry sound, it sounded like marbels rolling around in the motor...I'm sure it's toast....it smelled like burning rubber. Well now I am in search of a new one, wow I forgot how expensive they can be...this one lasted 6 years. So I'm asking all of you ..what kind of vacuum do you have??? was it a spendy one?? How many amps?? Do you like yours? or hate it?? Looking for any kind of reviews.

Are you sure maybe just the belt didnt break and that's why you smell the burning rubber? Belts are common to break as we've had to replace ours already, might be something you would want to check before buying a whole new vacumn.

I am sorry your vacuum died, what an inconvenience. My vacuum is just over 5 years old. It is a Hoover Supreme Soft & Light. Triple filtration. It is either 12 or 13 amps (it was difficult to read that part of the vacuum). It has a stair cleaning attachment. I have had apartments with stairs, but currently I am on one floor. (I still use the attachment to clean under furniture and hard to reach places and my curtains) The vacuum uses bags, but I can get a package of 3 for about $2 and it lasts me about a year. It was bought new and given to me as a present from my dad when I moved into my first apartment. I think it was between $60-$80, not exactly sure because it was a present. I like it, it does it's job. I would definitely need to do some research on vacuumes for my next one. There are so many to choose from and I would want one that's as light weight as the one I have now. Good luck with your vacuum search!

I have a Hoover Windtunnel, it is 12 amps. I like it. Before this one I had bought the cheapest vacuums and they just didn't last at all. This one was about $120 and it really works well. I haven't had it long, only about 6 months, so I don't know yet about it's longevity.

I would start checking out Freecycle and second hand places before I'd buy a brand new one. If you can get by a few more months borrowing (though I see those two chubby furbabies in your avatar, so maybe not) yard sale season is coming up here in 16 weeks or so, so you might be able to invest in a good one then.

I've had a Dyson for 2 years and I LOVE it! It's kinda pricey, but it was soooo worth it for me. I have the purple one (for animals).

Thanks ladies, I priced those Dyson "wow, they are pricy"..but I'v heard good things about them. I will be going to Target on saturday and see what I'm looking at. That last one was 19.5 amps...it was a little pricey too, but what good is it if it doesn't last. Tracy, I'm sure it's done that noise it makes is deafening...it sounds like barrings rolling around in there, I was almost scarred to touch it..to turn it off.
My mom called today and I told her about it, she wants to send me $100 to help me out...(she is such a sweetie).

I also have a Dyson and I love it. I have the purple one for animal hair and it works great. I've had my Dyson now for about 6 months. I love the fact that it is bagless, so now I don't have to worry about buying bags. It is pricey, but I wanted something that would last years instead of having to buy a new one every year or two.

If it sounds like marble rolling around then it is either one of two things. You caught something in the fan (maybe a rock or coin) and it broke the fan or else it is the bearings in the motor or brushroll. The rubber smell would be the belt. Most vacuum stores will give you a free estimate. It may be cheaper to repair it than to replace it. Before buying a vacuum though, go to a repair store and see if they have any vacuums that were repaired and never picked up. You can get dirt cheap vacuums that way or at least ask the repair person which vacuum do they see the most for repairs and then stay clear of whatever vacuum they say.

I've had an Oreck for about 2 years now, and I love, love, love it! It's sooo light, and the cord is the longest I've ever seen. I think Oreck has no interest payment plans too.

I have a "cheap-y" one. it cost all of maybe 29 dollars plus tax. i do alot of sweeping my carpet though. with it just being me and dh, doesn't get too bad. although even though it is just two of us, that doesnt mean mac and cheese doesnt end up on the floor

~I have a Hoover Powermax canister. It was a wedding gift from my Uncle and it's in it's 7th year of use. I've replaced the belt about 10 times. Even though I clean the bar every month, my long hair and threads from sewing can gunk it up sometimes. Belts are only $1. It does rev VERY loudly when the belt melts and snaps. I keep thinking it's about time to start shopping for a good, cheap vacuum just in case. How long are vacuums supposed to last?~
