    Default Question about a painting??

I have a painting that I need to know the name of...It's a Husband and Wife standing in a field praying there is a pitch fork standing upright and a basket laying on the ground and they look like they are dressed like the Amish people... It is a popular painting and for the life of me I can't remember what the name of it is! My grandmother said it looks like an original..it has no signature on the front like most paintings and it has a paper covering the back..My grandmother collects antiques and she told me along time ago that I should take it to a dealer and see if it is a original..My sil has a reproduction of the same painting and when she seen mine she also said it looks like it an original also..Any ideas would be great!

Okay, I have a picture of it in a prayer book I have. It is a man and woman reciting the Angelus at dark (Angelus is a Catholic prayer in honor of the Blessed Virgin). The artist is Millet (sorry, they don't give a first name or a title).

It is called "The Angelus" by Jean-Francois Millet.

~I thought American Gothic was in front of a farmhouse and the couple isn't Amish. The man is bald and wears glasses in that picture. Have you tried "Google-ing" it?~

Glad I could help...you described the picture and I knew where I had seen it--just had to put a name and a title to it!

    It's a great painting!

I looked it up on the internet. I think it may be a version of american gothic, there are so many different ones out there. Seems everyone has a version of it for themselves.

Oh, that's a nice painting. I wouldn't mind having that hang in my house.

I would call up my local art museum and make an appointment to see the curator. He or she should be able to give you some help. If its an orginal you may want to look into insurance for it.
