Thread: Full day kindergarten?

I used to be a supporter of 1/2 day kindergarten,
but now that my dd is in 1/2 day, I realize the benefit of full day. Because of all the requirements of the No Child Left Behind Act, they literally need every minute of 1/2 day kindergarten to pack it all in. They don't even have time for recess because of all the classroom requirements. Luckily my dd is very bright and has caught on to things quickly. There are many children in the class who cannot read yet, who probably would be reading if they had full day instruction.
The reality is that most kids are in daycare all day anyway, so full day kindergarten probably won't be that big of a deal for them. The kids I know in other school districts who are in full day get plenty of breaks, recesses and times for snack. It is a much more relaxed pace in full day, imo.

Intlmom, That sounds like a really good option. I know I already posted, but I thought i should add that here you can opt your kid out of kindergarten for one year if you don't think they are ready for whatever reason, then they will go to K the next school year, I think alot of parents do this when their children make the technical age cutoff but are on the younger end of it. my son will be on the old end and we are actually considering testing him into K, but we will see how preschool goes first LOL
