Default Self Checkout at the grocery store

One of the larger grocery stores that i shop has recently added a self checkout.
We tried it for the first time yesterday & I found that it is very simple, accurate & even kind of fun to use.
It did help that the employee assigned to teach customers how to use the checkout was very helpful & pleasant.
The lines at the only 2 manned registers were very long, so going through the self checkout was much quicker. i had a bunch of coupons & even a bunch of FREE co's. they all scanned correctly.
I am impressed. I'll be using the self checkout in the future as I can take my own canvas shopping bags & bag the way I'd like.

Anyone else using self checkouts! I know Wal mart has them, but I don't shop there.

Wal-Mart's self checkout is a pain in my rear. Often things won't scan until I've passed it over the glass 10 times, and then sometimes something isn't found and the the customer service lady comes over, cranky as ever, wondering what I did wrong. It hasn't been as much of a problem lately, and I still use it most of the time, but I try to avoid being near the desk with the customer service person because dang, they are not friendly at our Wal-Mart.

The other place I shop is Wegmans and ours doesn't have this system.

I was wondering if Wegmans had them yet.
I like shopping there too, but the closest one is 30 min away.

I like the self checkout, especially being able to bag the groceries how I like. The only issues I have had is Lowes Foods the thing you put coupons in...sometimes it doesn't register that you put it in the slot, it will lock up till you put it in, so you have to have someone retrieve the coupon so you can put it in the slot again. At our Krogers you can't scan your own coupons at the self checkout, of course I learned that after going through self checkout when they were busy and held up that line waiting for an employee to come and scan my coupons. If they had a sign saying no coupons at these registers or something I would have gone through a traditional register.

    Default I don't like them.

It's a pain if you have smaller kids, as it takes FOREVER to check out because they want to scan everything, and sometimes my kids scan the items twice. Also, you have to put your scanned items on the ledge and if it doesn't register that you've put them there, then the employee has to come and fix it. I have never used that thing without having to get help. I must be an idiot!

Our grocery store has one. My DH hates it but I think it's fun to use. They have a clerk assigned just to monitor the self-checkout and they are quick to respond if there is a problem.

Our walmarts here have the self checkouts. So does Albertsons. I'm sure there's a few of the other grocery stores do to.

I don't use them. I don't get paid to check myself out so I don't.

My regular grocery store doesn't have self-check.

If they are using the self-check as a way to test the waters to replace pulse people, then I am against it.

Not only will the stores downsize all those baggers and cashiers for a few 'customer service - what did the customer do wrong and keeping an eye out that no one steals anything' but I seriously doubt the store owners will say "gee, the customers have to scan and bag their own stuff...let me lower the prices for them"
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

I like them. Like Peachy- I like being able to bag stuff the way I want. The only problem I have had is magazines at Walmart- they don't ever want to ring up. On the up side- it keeps me from impulse buying them.

If we have just a few things we use them at Lowe's... none of the other places around here have them. Well, Walmart might but I haven't been in there in a few years. Anyhoo, I prefer them if we just have one or two items but if we're getting a bunch of stuff or the boys are particularly bouncy I prefer to go through a live person line.

If I am expected to scan my own purchases then I expect a 10% discount. If I'm not being rewarded to do it myself, I'm not doing it.

i enjoy scanning my own stuff at BJs and Home Depot it generally takes less time and i also use my own bags (w/o evil bagger glaring). I find it so convenient and i hate it when stores dont offer it.

I like using them too... except at Meijer it is only if you have 12 items or less.
