    Default I love A/C but...

When I got to work Friday afternoon, the library seemed somewhat warmer than usual. But it's hot out, and I assumed it was just me. When I arrived early afternoon today, it was warmer/stuffy. A/C obviously off. We had really severe thunderstorms in the area Thursday night, so they probably zapped it - sometimes happens - and it probably warmed up so gradually during the day on Friday that the day staff didn't notice. So I called maintenance. The guy answered the pager and said in a really hassled tone of voice, "Well, right now I'm having trouble with the fire alarms here!" Ok. Pointless fire alarm claxons are much more annoying than warm is, so I said sweetly that I understood - and just whenever he could get around to it, could someone check. I know maintenance can be really harried on nights/weekends in a large hospital plant. But he came fairly soon and fixed it. Boy did he fix it. Now, several hours later, you could hang meat in here. Why can't there EVER be a comfortable medium? It's freezing in the winter; we wear our coats the entire shift and the med students sometimes leave saying it's just too cold to study, but maintenance says there's nothing they can do about it. Then the weather changes and -- we freeze in the summer. I wish I had a cup of tea so I could pour it over my feet and fingers, and my nose is a popsicle.

Do others of you have these sorts of extreme temperatures at work? It is really annoying sometimes.

It's just the opposite at DD's private school. It's so hot inside all the time (even summer) that some of the kids become sick on their stomachs. I went in to pick DD up 30 minutes early last Thursday, and it felt like a oven inside when I walked through the doors. I asked her teacher about it and she said they didn't have the funds right now to fix the AC, but they would consider it over the summer. Our temps can reach into the 90's alot of days! Well, this is DD's last year there, so thankfully, she won't have to suffer the heat from now on.

How can kids learn in an environment like that?

All of the rooms would be different temps at work. A few classrooms had thermostats that controlled multiple rooms and needless to say, ours didn't have one. We were always sweltering by lunchtime and then freezing during naptime. No rhyme or reason
