My poor DH
He had some blood tests done and his cholesterol came back borderline high (which we knew) but its not nearly as bad as its been in the past, we're eating healthier and thats helped alot.
On the test results paper it said he should exercise, take niacin or drink red wine for the high cholesterol so DH decided to start taking niacin. Well he bought a high-dose, time-release niacin.
When he came home from work today he said he felt like he was burning up and about 15 minutes later he was totally red in the face. I told him to go take a cool shower and when he removed his clothes he looked like he had been sunbathing nude and got a bad sunburn!
Niacin causes temporary flushing, severe in his case. He's not going to take it any more.
Poor guy!

I have taken Niacin before on my doctor's recommendation. It is best to take it at bedtime, then the flushing occurs while you are sleeping.

Also, if he takes an aspirin with the niacin it helps to redue the flushing!

Yes we've changed our diet and he is eating alot more fiber, he's eating oatmeal as well and that's why his cholesterol went from high to borderline high. He's cut way down on dairy and he loooves his milk and ice cream. Now he drinks soymilk and we keep frozen yogurt or soy ice cream or frozen fruit bars in the freezer.
He's tried the statin drugs but he didn't like the side effects.
I told him that now he has to try the dreaded e-word, exercise LOL.
Julie, thanks for the aspirin tip. I'll pass it on to him but he already told me he doesn't want to take it anymore.“When you get to the end of all the light you know

Oh, forgot to post that I'm posting a recipe for a fruit smoothie in kitchen basics using vanilla soy milk (my DH has been drinking it lately) and yogurt that your hubby might enjoy. I'm not a big fan of soy milk, but I can't get enough of this smoothie. It's a great pick-me-up. Might want to give it a try.

Hi, my brother in law takes niacin and he has had the flushing also. His heart doctor told him to put the bottle of niacin in the refrigerator and take the pill with some yougurt. He told me that he has not flushed since doing that. It might be worth giving it a try. Good luck!
