Need advice/help...please
I'm tired. And frustrated.
Our neighbors (above us) are LOUD. Their living room is right above our bedroom. They play the TV (with a Bose surround sound no less!) until nearly midnight EVERY FREAKING NIGHT!!!
I've talked to them about turning it down. It helped for like 3 days. It's not loud enough outside for a noise complaint. It's just that they have the speaker on it's side so that the base is facing down (it's just how it fits into their entertainment center...yes, I've seen it) right at our bedroom ceiling.
ARGH!! I just want to SCREAM!! I'm SO tired!!!!!!
Does anyone have any suggestions for some sort of white noise - rain sounds? Flute music? Anyone know of ear plugs that would be comfortable enough to sleep in?
I'm desperate...will try just about anything at this point!! I even looked for a "nature sounds" CD at the store (like rain/stream/creek...I like water noises), but couldn't find one. Does anyone have some titles that I could type into Amazon or eBay to buy?
We tried running the air filter on high, but it's SO loud...and it moves so much air on high that the room ends up cold...esp in winter! (Remember it's Alaska and it's cold enough without any help...often in summer, too).
Please...any advice would be greatly appreciated. I've been using No-Doz just to get through work days...it's starting to not really have much effect. We can't move for 12 more months.Kace - married to Dh 12 years

How much longer is your lease; could you move? Are there any other apartments in your building that may be available for you to move to? Are the apartments comparable, it might be a big PIA, but could you switch apartments? Also, could you switch bedrooms? Just random thoughts!

It's not an apartment...it's a MIL apartment...and it's like a large studio (all one big room with separate kitchen and bath...I do have a nice pantry, though!).
We can't afford to move (the rent is CHEAP for here and all we can afford) until my Dh finishes college and has gotten a job...graduates in 11 months... I figure about a month to find work and get a first paycheck??
That's why we're looking for something that would act like white noise...

Do you have a fan you could run in your bed at night? That kind of noise puts me right to sleep. I use my a/c for the noise. Good luck. Maybe try to talk to them again?

Talk to them again; maybe see if you can compromise; say 10PM on weeknight, midnight on Fri/Saturday night.

That's kinda what we did with the air purifier on high. It just gets SO cold. We turn our heater off in the summers, but it gets mighty nippy inside...it's in the 40's at night here in the summer. The extra circulation makes it even colder (it's like 64 or 65 in our place in the summer...NO A/C...during the DAY)...which I'm sure sounds nice when it's 100 degrees outside, but when it's in the 50's or 60's outside and you're already cool from that...it's just plain cold inside.
We'll try talking to them again (they own the house and we're renting cheaply...the guy is a "this is my castle" kind of guy and doesn't think he should have to adjust to anyone else). I can understand that to a point...but, I couldn't just ignore the needs of others...esp when it's no skin off my nose...turning it down doesn't turn it OFF...
We simply can't afford more rent for the time being. So, we're on the desperate hunt for alternatives in the mean time...
An CD suggestions? We could program our stereo to play for a few hours and then shut off (after he goes to bed...about 1 or 2am). We get up at 6:15...so these "up until midnight or so" nights are killing us...

I know what you mean by inconsiderate neighbors...wish that I had some good advice.
our neighbors got to the point where they wouldn't answer the door when I would call the police(had to do that more than once in one night!).The police got so tired of it that they went to the back of the house & pulled the breakers to "off"...& that settled it. I would tell you to do the same to your neighbors...only you'd probably get into trouble.

Yup! Definitely would cause trouble. Though I'm thinking of praying that God will make their TV die...is that wrong?
I just want sleep!!!!

That's tough with a studio apartment. My upstairs neighbors of the moment are loud at night (I'm thinking they have a treadmill in the bedroom) but I moved the bed into my living room -- problem solved, for me.
If it's the bass thudding you're getting, I don't know if nature sounds would cover it very well. You might try to look for a thunderstorm CD. I had one that was pretty loud. I've done the fan thing too, but I can put it at the doorway blowing into the other room, and you don't have that option. Earplugs might help if you can stand to wear them, but is it a matter of vibrations as well as noise? Bass speakers strike dread into my heart!
Not much advice, but I understand how frustrated and exhausted you must be. I hope you find a solution soon.Donna

Target and Walmart have a --display that has a lot of cds that you can listen to before you buy them. I've gotten nature sound cd's there. I know I didn't explain it very well, but if you have either close to you its worth a look.
I will never miss apartment life. Maybe ask landlord if he would just come down and listen to what you are hearing and see if that doesn't help.
Now would someone like my neighbors d---- barking dog???? Free to even a bad home today.

You can buy little foam earplugs for swimming that are fairly comfortable, they dull noise (sort of like being underwater) but may not be effective against bass thumping.
Have you tried just tuning the radio to no station and listening to static?

I think you should definitely try talking to them again. Maybe have them come downstairs and hear what it sounds like? Otherwise I don't think any nature or white noise CD is going to help. We have a box fan in our window and that helps drown out a lot of noise.
They can have our neighbors dogs too!!

Hallmark stores also sell the nature CDs that you're looking for. Good luck!

I didn't think of checking Walmart... I'll look there...
Good idea to have them come down and see what it's like. Hadn't really thought of that...
Thanks!

a friend of mine had this same problem
she setup some kind of a tent on her bed
& layered quilts over top
had a fan & nature sounds going
I have had to use those sof t foam ear plugs, they work quite well
little noises wake me up
can't imagine having to deal with the big noises all night long
wish you well in resolving the matter!
