I last spoke to my gf on Friday from work - just a quick phone call to say hi etc and I thought of calling her Monday evening but was busy. I had planned on calling her Tuesday evening instead but I was out at a concert. Tonight I 'needed' to call her to discuss a few things that were plaguing my thoughts and I found out that she gave birth on Tuesday afternoon!
Didnt get a phone call, no email ... nothing - as hubby promised LOL. Everyone local knew but Im the furthest and they didnt want to make LD calls from the hospital But when I did call her tonight they had just gotten home with the baby and were just settling in.
I AM NOW A GODMOTHER! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! (See, I knew there was a reason why I wanted to call her on Monday! )
Now, can someone please explain to me the traditional role that a godmother plays? LOL
I will post pics as soon as I can get one from her or when I go to visit very very soon.

Congrats on being the Godmother! I am a god mother, and was always told, that if the parents aren't bringing up the child in the church, that it is your job to lad the child towards the church. Does that make sense?
My daughters God parents are in our will, that if anything happens to both of us, they will have custody of her.
For my family because of religion--being a Godparent meant being there for the child, the parents and making sure the child was brought up in christian faith. But for others I believe its like being a extra aunt .

To Update Y'all:
My best friend gave birth to a beautiful baby boy - Victor Tristan *insert last name here* on June 26th. He weighs 7 lb's on the dot and is 19" long. He's beautiful! I almost cried when I first heard him cry over the phone (my gf is 6 hrs away )
PS: I dont think I was asked to be godmama on the relgious aspect of it but to take care of their son should something happen etc. And of course I will spoil him rotten - I cant wait!

The number one purpose of the Godmother, as far as I was taught, was to take care of the child should something happen to the parents (both or one or the other). But while the parents are alive, it is your right, no, your DUTY, to spoil that child beyond any comprehension, then send them home to their parents in a state of absolute shock and dismay that "Aunt Shorty" lets him do so many things that Mom and Dad will not.
