Help!! I have a debt collector that is insane. LTD Financial (google has all kinds of stuff on them as being bad collectors). They called my FIL's house last night and spent an inordinate amount of time harassing him to get my info. But wouldnt say what they wanted. They won't return my calls to talk to them. I have about had it. They want huge sums of money I simply don't have. Should I contact the origional company and explain to them? Maybe see if they will remove the collection from this company and deal with me directly? What options do i have?
Any legal reps here? Maybe you could help me with understanding what to do about the calling FIL and trying to demand funds and info from him??

How long has it been on your credit report? Sometimes if it has been over 7 years, "Bullying" companies buy your debt and try to use scare tactics to make you pay.
If you want to clean up your credit, http://www.creditboards.com/mambo/ is a great resource for doing just that. It has form letters and advice on how to work with creditors. You may want to check it out.

I let you know just as soon as I get them off of my back. I got a bill that from two yrs ago that I knew nothing about. It over 900 and there is no way Im can pay it.
I always thought there was a law on how late of the evening they could call you? I would check with the county attorney's office in your state. They may be able to give you more advice.

You have the right to inform a collection agency to stop calling you at work, to stop calling on the weekend, to call only during hours you prefer, or to stop calling you altogether. To do this, you must write to the collection agency and indicate at what hours and what location you may be called. You may also write the agency and inform them to stop all communications or inform it that you refuse to pay. It is best to send your letter return receipt requested and keep a copy. After receiving your letter, the agency may no longer contact you except as you instructed. Continued contact violates the collection laws and you may file a complaint with our office. However, the collection agency may report the debt to the credit bureau but you may challenge erroneous or disputed information on your credit report with the credit bureau. In addition, the collection agency may file a lawsuit against you if it believes the debt is valid. If you are sued, you have the right to appear and defend yourself in court.
Send them the letter and send it certified and request return reciept. Let them know that you will file against them with the attorney general's office. If they continue to call you, the first thing that you need to tell them is "This is to inform you that this call is being recorded and as per the certified letter that LTD Financial recieved on [insert date] that was signed for by [insert name of person signing] you were informed in writing to make no further phone calls regarding this matter. You in violation and this recording will be forwarded along with my complaint to the Colorado Attorney General's office." Then hang up. Tell them you are recording whether you are or not. I hope that you can get the bloodsuckers off of your back.

Be careful about what you sign. I have heard they will forge your signature if you give it to them. Best bet would be to type it out.
Please do not sign any letter you send them. Collection agencies have been known to forge signatures quite frequently. Tink is right, have your letters to them typed, and do not sign it.
Also, google the Fair Debt Practices Act. You have rights and recourse when you or a family member are being harassed.
