Buying New Refrigerator
DH got the milk out Saturday & it had gone
again (doesn't expire until the 4th). Known somethings wrong since its not keeping things real cold. I've adjusted the setting several times over the last month, helps some but not enough. Its 14 years old & I hoped it would last another year or so. Would you call someone out to check it? Hate to waste money on it, but a new one will cost even more.
We planned to go & order one over the weekend, but it didn't happen. Really think we better go this week since it takes 7 to 8 days to come in. Any suggestion on brands? Want ice maker, spill proof shelves (not the wire ones), 18 cuft or so & hoping for a good price! Getting a little excited... even DH mentioned we can buy
again once we get the new fridge!
Anyone else getting ready to spend money on a much needed item?

Well, it looks like we are in the same situation. Our fridge is about 17 years old and has broken twice in the last 2 years. We have decided to purchase a new one. Not sure what we will buy but I'm going to take my take and check around . We have a little dorm fridge that was in my son's room so we moved that to the kitchen and we have a large freezer so I think we can handle several weeks without rushing.
PS - We are also buying a new Washer/Dryer (we have a stackable unit - so you have to buy both) the washer is about 20 years old and again it has broken a couple of times in the last two years.
Good luck with your purchase let me know what you decide to buy.

Well I have a GE 18 cubic ft with the adjutable, spill proof shelves. I got it on sale last yr for $460 including tax and delivery. I do wish it was a bit bigger but its what we could afford, plus we have a huge freezer so that helps. It doesnt have an ice maker though. We have not had any problems with it

Got one about 3 years ago at a scratch and dent sale our Lowes was having.
It has ice water and ice maker in the door, is stainless steel and huge. DH had to cut down a cabinet for it to fit in. Love it was $1,200.00 but because of scratch on side tha faces wall and dent (knee mark) under calendar was markd down to $700.00. We did have to bring it home ourselves. No big deal for us pickup truck and helpful neighbors.

Do you have pets? Check you coils underneath they attrach pet fur and this can cause poor cooling. I have to vaccum mine every month as shepard loves to lay in front of it. DH got me a special tool that like a long skinny bristle brush that I go inbetween the coils with. DH used to be in apartment maintenance and says thats the biggest reason refigs stop cooling properly. Second is too close to the wall in the back pull it off the wall a few more inches and help it breath.

Thanks for the tip Laurie. DH vacuumed under it a week or so back, but could have missed the coils... unsure how well he got under it. Will try again!
I've looked online at Kermore, Whirpool, Maytag & Hotpoint... completely lost on which to go with & the price varies a lot!

We just recently bought an LG french door refrigerator - it was pricey, about $2100 after taxes, but it's 22.4 cubic feet, has water on the door and an ice maker, and is very energy-efficient. It has removable/sliding glass shelves, and the lighting inside is fantastic, even when the fridge is full. I'm thrilled with it - we're going to have it for many years, and it should fit our needs very well.
The bottom freezer is wonderful, btw - even if I hadn't gone for the french door model, I would have opted for a bottom freezer (with pull out, so you don't have to lay on the floor!). Cooler air falls, so they make more sense from an economic standpoint - plus it's nice to just pull out the drawer. My old top freezer was always dropping stuff onto the floor, which was a major pain. Stuff would tend to get "lost" in the freezer, too - that hasn't been a problem now since I can see everything at once (there's great light in the freezer compartment, too!).

we don't need a new fridge yet, but when the time comes, i want one with hte freezer on the bottom too. beside the energy efficent thing, with the fridge part on top, it's easier for me to get to things that are used more often. i'm in the fridge more than the freezer part and it hurts some days to bed down to find things.
