How many of you don't own a house?
I don't....It's the only thing I wish for so desperately and yet so far out of reach that I wonder if I will ever have my dream come true!

We don't own our own house but don't feel too bad about it. We'd be really struggling if we bought our own house so we're comfortable renting one.

I don't own my own house. I'm still paying down student debt as much as I can, but I hope someday I can have a house and - more importantly - land to call my own. It's certainly fun to while away the time dreaming of what I could do with my own place.

We bought our home just over a year ago. We got an 80/20 loan and the sellers paid all of our closing costs, so we actually walked away with a little over $900 (our earnest money was given back to us, basically). The cost of renting here has since turned absolutely ridiculous, so I'm glad we bought when we did.

We currently rent. We used to have a home and we were stupid enough to use our personal credit to finance my dh's business. His business did awesome for a few years, then went under after 9/11 resulting in us losing everything. So here we sit still working on cleaning up our credit from that, we hope to buy again in a couple of years.

We don't either... yet. Our dream in the end is to retire to
's grandfather's property by a lake and build a cedar log cabin there. If we never own a home before that, oh well. But we WILL own that one when the time comes!

we bought ours 4 years ago because the payments INCLUDING homeowners insurance was the same as what we were paying in rent. after we left, the renters upped the payments to 475, so now we're paying quite a bit less for a much better house. and we weren't out any closing costs or anything because it was all combined into our loan amount.

Well, I wouldn't say we "own" our home, yet. Having a mortgage (which we do) and owning are not the same thing. We have a 25 year, low fixed interest rate and it is definitely less than renting would be, but you also have to consider insurance, repairs, and all kinds of headaches with "owning" a home. If I could do it over again I'd probably wait a bit longer before jumping in.

We don't own, but I would love to. It will have to wait a few years I guess.

We are very happy to be renting a "maintenance free" townhome. We owned a home for four years, it was a nightmare of expensive repairs and maintenance ($4,000 in one three month period), and then we ended up losing everything when DH lost his job in 2004. Please beware of the "0% down first time home buyers" programs. Because we put nothing down, even financing our closing costs, when we tried to sell after DH lost his job, it was impossible. We just owed too much on the house. It was a very modest three bedroom, one bath ranch built in 1955. Fifty year old homes have lots of hidden problems sometimes. We paid for a home inspection, of course, before we purchased, and even paid for a one year warranty, but after the warranty was up, EVERYTHING started breaking, the main water line from the house to the meter burst in our front yard ($800), the central air needed replacing ($1,800), and then two months later, the furnace ($1,400). I very much regret ever buying the house, we could not sell it, and had to file bankruptcy, our credit was ruined. Before we gave up on the house, we were informed our 50 year old sewer line was made of something similar to card board, and would need to dig up our driveway to replace the line, at a cost of $1,500. By the time we moved out, I HATED that house.

~We do own this home but it almost seems like a rent situation. We live in 750 square feet and it's not even close to the type and size house I long for. We'd need about $70K saved or an yearly pay increase of $25K to upgrade to what I want. So I understand the frustration that goes with the longing. I wonder if it will ever happen. Then I try to remember that the things we wait longer for and work harder for are much more appreciated when obtained. There's no guarantee that having what I want will make me any more content so I'm working on contentment in my current living situation.~

We don't since DH is military and we live overseas. Whenever we move back stateside we'd like to buy one. It depends on which part of the country we'll end up.

We don't...and we hate where we're stuck renting...but, it's what we can afford. Hope to someday own at least a townhouse...or condo...something to call our own.
