How much have YOUR property taxes gone up this year?
~We just got our tax bill and it's gone up $376 this year. URG!!!! We have a simple 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom rancher on 3/4 acre in a city suburb. No basement, no garage, no fence, no pool, no improvements at all really. As annoyed as I am, I feel REALLY sorry for all of my neighbors whose home values are double and triple mine. In fact, there's a rancher for sale a few houses down that listed it's taxes for 2006 as $4550. It's probably over $5K this year. I looked at the our bill and did the math. It's pretty clear now that even if we could save the money to remodel this house with an addition we wouldn't be able to afford the increase in taxes. So I guess we'll be moving in a few years. How much did yours go up?~

this is my first year in our home. i think my dad told me it was in the high $2,000 range but im not really sure. and even that he said was too much for the house/land and that i should have it re-evaluated (? not sure what the correct word to use is). i need to start saving for that now.

My taxes have roughly doubled in ten years, but we have a "homestead exemption" that subtracts $25,000 over the assessed value of your house, and it can't go up more than 3% a year once you're "homesteaded". Still, the taxes are outrageous! I'm only taxed on roughly $29,000 value of my home (bought it when they were really cheap) and I pay over $1000 a year. I can buy a $75,000 house in S. Ga. right now and only pay $350 a year in taxes. Of course, we have no state income tax, or personal property taxes, which Ga. does, so it works out about the same.

We're in an agricultural program for most of our land and have 6 separate parcel bills, luckily the ag is a HUGE savings or we'd be out on our rear! In the last two years they passed yet ANOTHER school levy (sorry, our country high school does NOT need a natatorium to keep up with our local city, rant!) And they also built a library in town that could give the taj mahal a run for it's money, urgh, so yep, they went up significantly here, grrrrrr.

One of the few good things about where I live is the low property taxes. We live in a middle class neighborhood, 2800 sq ft, w/inground pool on an acre lot. Our house has been completely updated and remodeled within the past five years (although we are remodeling some parts again). This year's property taxes are in the $420 range. Not sure of the exact amount since it is handled through the escrow and property tax notices don't come out until October.
We have not had an increase in at least 3 years. As much as I dislike this city, it does have a few good points.DD (19)

Our property taxes have only gone up $17 (for the year). School taxes have remained the same.

We have high property taxes where we live but we knew that when we bought this house. That's ok because we have great public schools here. That being said, oddly enough our taxes went down for 2007. Only a few dollars a month but that means more for the extra principle. Every little bit counts.
When we first moved here, we had our house built and almost every mortgage company screwed up the first year's taxes. People up and down this street were making double equity payment for a year to catch up. I don't know why ours was different but we only paid a $100 extra a month. It hurt a lot of our neighbors.

Our property taxes went up about $100 this year, from $2400 to $2500, which is still very low for this general area. We have a 10-year-old 3 bedroom walkout ranch. The taxes for comparable houses in my hometown 30 minutes away are in the 4K range.

Ours went down a few dollars but still over $2400 for the year.
We have a new middle school opening this year and there was no tax levy for it. This is the best school district in the state. They follow the Dave Ramsey plan. They budgeted for it and paid cash for it over a 2 year budget.Debra

The value of our house went up 6,000, but I'm not sure how much that raised our taxes. We just filed for a homestead exemption too, so that will bring them down a lot lower. We are still paying the non-exemption rate so we will be getting a refund sometime soon. Our taxes are added into our mortgage every month so we don't have to make one big payment. They are usually 3600 per year, with the exemption they should drop to around 2800.

I live in Michigan and we are taxed to death here! Our summer taxes alone went up $300!! Not only do we get the property taxes, we also get the income taxes, sales tax, and our Governor wants to tax us even more!! She wanted to have a service tax, but thankfully that was shot down.
I know quite a few people who are saying that they are going to be taxed out of their homes. We (DH & I) figured out that if it our taxes continue to increase like it has been then in 5 yrs we will be paying $2000 MORE A YEAR in just property taxes!!!

We are in Montgomery, Alabama. One drawback to this city is the high sales tax - 10%. We are taxed 10% on everything we buy from books, to shoes, to food. I would almost be willing to pay more for our property taxes if we could have our sales tax lowered.
It ranks in the top 2% in affordability of property taxes nation wide.Last edited by Neeley; 07-24-2007 at 11:40 PM.
