Mattress Rant
What is going on with mattress manufacturing? Did they all decide to just make garbage anymore? What happened to the times a mattress would last for 10 years or so? Our last one made it 5 years and was in SAD shape (hurting Dh's back and my shoulder - I like to sleep on my side). So, we bought a new mattress in April...yes, just 3 months ago. It's ALREADY got BIG divots in it...yes, the two spots where we each lay. You can even see them when the bed is made! Through the blankets!! We paid $400 for it!! And JUST the mattress...NOT a box spring or frame, too!
Are there good mattresses out there anymore that are NOT pillow top or quilt top and are actually firm? And won't break down in 2 seconds? GRRRRRRRRRR. I just want to sleep comfortably!! I'm about to get the roll up mats out that are for camping and use THEM!!!
The company says all pillow and quilt tops do that naturally and it has to be a full 2" indention to return it or exchange it!!! (I'm going - I KNOW I don't want to exchange it). ARGH!!! It's like an inch and a half dented in.
Any ideas? I don't want to spend a fortune cause we're just going to move next fall. Help!! Wise, frugal ladies please come to the rescue!Kace - married to Dh 12 years

May I Ask what brand you got? We bought one in March and I still love it. And we got it cheaper because someone had brought it home and didn't like it so they returned it. The salesperson at the store (he was actually the district manager) said that some aren't as comfortable because of how they are made - the coils. The bed we bought has each coil seperate, not wired together. We bought a Simmons Beautyrest. We had a sealy before and I had trouble sleeping on my side because my hip would hurt. We got ours at Metro Mattress. If you have one near you that would be the place to go. And if you don't mind one that someone brought back you can get a real deal. When people buy them they have 14 days to return and they have to buy a waterproof pad to put on them. Ours was in brand new condition and it was even put back in plastic. We got it for $500 just the mattress. The guy had to call the warehouse somewhere to find what they had, and it took a few more days to get but that was fine.

I know that buying mattresses can get pricey. Ours was quite a bit more than the prices mentioned.

~I don't have any ideas for you but I just wanted to agree with Lisette on the Beautyrest. Ours is almost 8 years old and we still think it's awesome! I will be replacing it in 4 years because dust mites and invisible soil creeps me out. We paid about $700 for a queen set. Just a thought, do you flip and rotate your mattress regularly? I wonder if the dents would 'pop out' if you flipped it? Maybe someone else has some great ideas for you.~

we have the same problems here. i dont remember what kind ours is, it was a namebrand tho. we buy ours from a store that buys out other stores overstock or when they're going out of business and such, so we got a really good deal on them, too bad they're already breaking down.

It's a quilt top, no flip mattress. So, no flipping, but we do rotate it...although 3 months of use hasn't warranted many times.
I'm temped to flip it anyway and see if the other side is more comfortable!! hahahaha And see if it would "lessen" the divots.
I'll have to try the Beautyrest when we buy next time. I've heard good things before, but definitely like to have the frugal village reference.
We just don't want to buy anything else until we move (14 mo) cause we don't want to ship anything. It's SO annoying!!Kace - married to Dh 12 years

I hate to say this but $400 is not alot for a quality mattress. I know its alot of money but if you want a really good mattress then you have to spend more money

Well I know this is probably not the most frugal mattress in the world but we bought a sleep number bed and we love it.

It has a 20 year warranty with it.
It is filled with air and very lightweight. You will not have any divits in it in 4 months, you will never have divits in it ever.
If you like a firm mattress and husband wants a softer mattress you can have that with a sleep number bed.
I love it because my husband used to be a bed hog. Now he can not sleep on my side as it is to soft for him so he stays on his side of the bed.
We got ours in March when they had 0% interest for 18 months. They are a bit pricey but well worth it.
They do have a 30 money back garantee and if you know someone that has one use them as a reference and they get a $50 gc to the sleep number store.Debra

Oh, we broke the bank buying our last mattress three years ago. We spent 3grand on a king size Nature's Rest. I am not kidding you, it's the best money we ever spent. That bed is a dream. My husband and myself NEVER get stiff necks or back aches from it. I'm not sure it's for everyone, but we will NEVER buy a different style mattress. This one is guaranteed for 20 years, but even if it lasted 10-15, I'd say it was worth it. We are fortunate that we could afford it, but it was a great deal of money to shell out.

We have been having mattress problems too. My husband has been complaining that it is making his back hurt and shoulders. We have only had our mattress set for a year, so I went and bought one of the memory foam mattress topper to go on our bed and we really like it. I paid $125 for a 4" one at Walmart. It was a better solution for us instead of buying a different mattress.

I know its not frugal, but we spent a small fortune on a top of the line Sterns & Foster and we love it. Its about 11 years old and still feels, looks and sleeps like the day we got it. Its the most comfortabel bed I've ever had, well worth the money. We do flip it regularly, I'm sure that helps too.

No help from the company we bought that mattress from...of course. GRRR
We went yesterday and mattress shopped. We found a Simmons Beautyrest we really liked for $3300 (on sale!) EEK! We shopped some more and found a Spring Air with the same individual springs/set-up as the Simmons. Regularly $3000, but on sale, and then if you got their CC (0% until '09 - no pre pay penalties) it was another 10% off! It came to $1435 for a $3K mattress!!
It's SO supportive. You can sit on the edge and it stays strong (doesn't mush!). I tried laying on one side and Dh can literally BOUNCE into the other side and I can barely feel it!! Ours will be delivered on Saturday...I can't wait!!!!
Oh - and a 10 year warranty on it. And a 45 day sleep on it trial.
