Hi everyone! I'm Jess.
I've been lurking for a few weeks now, and you all seem super nice and supportive so I thought I'd say hello! I'll start by filling out the newbie questionnaire:
How did you hear about frugal village?
I was googling for budgeting tutorials and found your site.
What interests you here?
Everything! Budgeting advice, recipes, and hearing stories about peoples' lives that are different from my own.
Do you know any other members here?
Not yet!
How many kids? Ages?
None (hopefully someday! tick-tock tick-tock)
Tell us about yourself.
Well, I work in theatre (not a performer!), and right now have the highest-paying job I've ever had. I'll mail my last payment on my installment loan in November, and will officially be debt-free. I finally have a savings account that I am managing to contribute to regularly, and would like to buy an apartment here in the city someday.
PROBLEM: The job is making me sick to my stomach. It's not worth it. So I'm here to really get a grasp on my finances and expenses and see how I can adjust my lifestyle so that I can be happier with less money. Mainly, how to spend less on food!!!
Do you own any pets?
One cat.
SAHM or Working mom?
Neither, though I'm pretty sure when I decide to have a baby I'll have to support it somehow!
Married or single?
Single.
Interests and hobbies?
Nothing too exciting: reading, crossword puzzles, computer stuff, watching CSI marathons... I'm mostly at work these days.
Anyway, that's me! I'll probably mostly lurk, but wanted to say THANK YOU for all the information (and more importantly, inspiration) that I've already gleaned from this site. I have been tracking every penny I've spent since the beginning of August (I created a google spreadsheet so that I can update it both at work and at home) and hope to soon be able to use this info to create a (gulp) BUDGET! Wish me luck!!!

Welcome to the Village!

Sounds like you have an exciting though somewhat bit troubled life going on. Good news is that your main focus of buying food being your main obstacle is one of the easiest ones to remedy. Whenever any of us has a $$ problem , grocery shopping is the easiest to tweak. May be with some sacrifices on your part but it's not a major suffer fest.
Do you eat out or at home most? How many people are you feeding?

Thanks for all the welcomes!!!
Darlene, I'm only feeding myself. Until about a month ago, I had been doing the stereotypical Manhattan Single thing - eating out or ordering in or getting takeout for almost every meal. Nothing overly extravagant usually, a latte and croissant from Starbucks in the morning, sandwiches or Thai food or pasta or sushi for lunch/dinner. Whenever I would try to stock the (tiny) fridge in my apartment, I would find that the food went bad before I could eat it all. I told myself that it's simply too impractical to cook for one, but I'm realizing that the real problem is that I just have no idea how to do it! I have only the most basic cooking skills and very little discipline. BUT I'm ready to learn!
I guess my immediate goals are:
- spend WAY less money on food!
- learn to cook simple healthy meals with stuff I have on hand (as opposed to finding a fancy recipe, going to the grocery store with recipe in hand, spending $30 - $40 on stuff including stupid condiments and seasonings that I'll never use again)
- continue contributing as much as possible to savings and 401(k).
I have been doing SO much better since I found this site (have totally cut out the Starbucks!!!)
but there is so much more to learn.
Thanks again for all the kind words.
