Baby Zachary is sick again
We need everyone's prayers. Yesterday, my little one turned a year old....last night he woke up in the middle of the night crabby & sounding "croupy"....this morning we saw the dr. & she sent us for chest-xrays. Poor kiddo has brochitis(almost to the pnuemonia point). As many of you can remember that I stated in an earlier thread that my little boy has Down's Syndrome...well, b/c of this, he is much more prone to getting pnuemonia at the drop of a hat. We believe (&dr. agrees) that it must have started about 4 days ago. He had finished his supper... then he started to cough...not choking on food, but just a cough. It caused a gag reflex & up came his supper(TMI)...& he must have aspirated some into his lungs.
This is the 3rd time in his first year of life that he has had this..the first time landed him in the hospital when he was about 3 months old. the second time was in May(non-hospital).Doc's got him on antibiotics & a decongetant. Please pray for a quick recovery.Blessings
Debra

Sending lots of prayers & positive thoughts.
Have they suggested maybe reflux? My youngest, who although he does not have Downs, used to get pneumonia A LOT. It was almost immediate, a cough and a few days later BAM! It took us four bouts w/ pneumonia and a year to figure out that it was reflux, causing him to aspirate stomach contents, which in turn caused the pneumonia.
I hope Zachary gets better quickly!!

yankee mom - Zachary does have a swallowing disorder and that is the partial reason that he has aspirated, however, this is the first time that he ever displayed reflux(the throwing up after coughing). He's even had swallowing studies. When I take Zachary back next week for a follow-up, I am going to request that another study be done.
The first time that he had pnuemonia, they did the studies & they taught me how to position him when I supplemented with formula after nursing him(he would get so tired of working for his milk) -that worked really well. Then in May, after a routine xray of his heart & neck bones, it was discovered that he had it again...a slight case of it & he didn't show any signs & the doc didn't even hear anything when she listened to his chest. He had began holding his own bottle at the time,so doc said it was something that he had aspirated(which would make sense). It was also at this time that they had discovered his heart problems(another story).......I think too, that it didn't help matters much b/c the whole family, except Zachary(no symptoms at all) has been fighting some kind of a respiratory/sinus crud...perhaps the cough was brought on by that(I can't be certain)........but he hasn't coughed since last night when he woke up sounding horrible.
I am just thankful that we caught it in time and he isn't in the hospital.

Praying. Please see if you can check for food allergies/intolerances or try a formula for milk allergic babies for two weeks, then go back to regular milk. Lots of Down's kids have food issues - reflux would be one of the symptoms.
