Default What do you love and hate about new age/occult stores?

I was at the one in my town a few times and the thing that drives me crazy is the amount of candles everywhere!

But I love that it’s easy to get to.

    What about you guys?

Don't know much about them. I go to Sears and Kmart, Target and Khols.

Some years ago I wandered in a couple in malls to look around. Some things were interesting, but some struck me as so creepy and weird -- maybe we just had particularly creepy stores -- that I didn't linger. I'm sure many, probably most in fact, would lean far more to the "interesting" end of the spectrum, but I'm never anywhere where I see one nowadays. I do wish I had a good local source of incense. I order a couple of kinds I really like online, but the postage is totally outrageous. Like 10% of the order price for an item that weighs almost nothing.

They usually smell quite nice. Lots of incense.

I generally like the smell of the candles (unless there are too many) but the couple of stores I've been in both had many tinkling windchimes which just about drove me crazy.

I think it's kinda neat what's out there. Some think devil/drugs etc but you can use things as you will. To me, the word interesting sums it up. Different things for different people. No matter what you believe or what you do, be a good person and I'll be nice right back at ya.

I went into one to purchase incense. Once I got past the reek of Mary Jane all over the other customers clothes, I got what I needed, got out, and never went back. Not impressed.( And more than a little annoyed that those customers then got back in behind the wheel of a car.)

I can't usually stay in one very long because of the incense -- my lungs tighten up and I can't breathe. We do go when we are looking for new meditation tapes or books on healing and the like. DH goes in and looks while I stand outside. Then when he finds something specific I go in and look at it. We used to go to one when we lived in another city that sold a lot of herbs -- not so much here.

I have trouble with sensitivity to fragrances, so all the candles and incense is an immediate headache. BUT, it doesn't stop me! I love finding new "new-age" stores. Also, I hate to say it but sometimes, the shop owners can be irritating. I have identified an "I am more pagan than you" attitude that some have. I have no idea how that bodes for attracting new clientele.

One of my good friends runs a store like this, and I like hers. Usually what I dislike is that the sales people figure that you either know everything about a certain topic or are totally clueless and have no idea about anything in the store - and I'm definitely in between those two extremes.

I am bummed that one local store that I bought all of my incense from closed down - I have been thinking about ordering it online, just haven't gotten around to it yet.

There was a New Age store that I used to go to for candles and incense. They change owners and the new owners are Wiccan and a little too much for me. The last time I went in there I wanted to buy a cd of ocean sounds. They noticed the cross I was wearing and tried to start a religious discussion.
I paid for my cd and left. I was also on the old owners mailing list to get notified of sales and discounts, now I have been recieving notices of wiccan meetings.

with me and incense i love going to this one store called nirvana. it used to be in the dayton mall but now its in the fairfield mall. once when i was reading about wicca i got some stuff from a site called http://www.whisperedprayers.net and i got a really nice wine glass with a dragon on it (gonna have to get another one b/c zack probbably threw it out) for $13 and i think some ginger incense. here is what the glass looks like http://store.whisperedprayers.net/Me...oduct_Count=13 when zack and i was planning to get married i got a blue dress from nirvana and a white cloak from a store called she fantasies. they have a lot of pretty jewlry and old fashioned dresses and other stuff that i would love to have but cant afford (lol).
