Default Part of my building just burned down

The fire alarm went off in my apartment building early this morning and I didn’t really know what to do about it. Thinking back, I realized that I never really went through a fire plan with my foster family and sort of freaked out a little.

I woke my bf up and told him to get dressed. I then went out into the hallway and watched people leaving their apartments. The hallway smelled like smoke but from down the way a bit.
I went back into my apartment, grabbed all of my important papers, dumped my computers files on to my external hard drive and grabbed that, and grabbed cell phones, keys and other stuff. I jammed it all into my backpack and we went to my car to sleep.

I figured that everything else in the apartment was covered mostly by my renters insurance and the stuff I grabbed was important to paying bills and making my life work.

The person upstairs and down a little bit fell asleep smoking and set part of her apartment on fire. Or at least that’s what I heard.

I’m going to start leaving a copy of my files on the hard drive so if something happens I can grab it and then keep all of my checkbooks and other things in one place so I don’t have to root around for it all. I figure this will take like no time cuz its all out the door.

What do you do if there’s a fire?

Wow, that sucks. Hope you didn't have any damage to your apartment. That is one reason I never wanted to live in an apartment building. You are at the mercy of other people and the stupid things that they do.

I am sorry to hear about that. I don't know what I would do if there was a fire. Of course get my kids out safely would be a priority. I think I would get the laptop if I had time. All important papers and picture negatives are kept in a fire safe, so I would just leave, that is what I have insurance for.

I've been in 1 fire & almost in another.
In the first fire I was only about 6/7 yrs old & my mom & I were the only 2 at home. I was playing in my room while she was taking a bath and all the sudden the livingroom filled with smoke and so I ran to the bathroom door & banged on it yelling at my mom that there was smoke coming in the house, she told me to get outside & she climbed out the bathroom window. My cat who just had kittens was taking them one at a time outside away from the ouse as well.
The second fire occured when the people behind us set the place on fire {arson} all I grabbed was my 3 year old daughter & our cat & got outside.

Oh my! I am glad everyone made it out safely!

I don't know what I would do if we were ever in a fire. FREAK OUT for one thing! You did good at staying calm and thinking about what to take.

I think it is important for us to think about this and at least be prepared in case it does happen.

we dont really have a fire plan here. when we are in the bedroom i have 2 ways to get us out. through our door or the window. im just glad mom got the bars off when she got new windows put in. if we had had a fire with those bars on and i couldnt get out the door then i would have had to break the window and wait until help came or die. the lady that lived here had bars on all the windows.

I hope it all works out for you and I am glad you are safe. If you have renters insurance, that should pay for temp. housing if they won't let you back into your apt. right away. At least mine has that feature. I hope they let you back in and your things won't smell like smoke.
