Funny thing happened at work - Homemade Cookies
The other day, I wanted something sweet. We had already spent all our budgetted money for the week, so I decided to bake cookies. I made chocolate chip. I took some to work and every one made comments about them.... How lucky I was to have homemade, must be spoiled to have time to make them, etc. It was really kind of funny - I made them out of necessity. So, I just smiled, shared some and laughed to myself. It didnt take that much time - I baked them in between the dishes, laundry and other chores. Just thought I would share.

Yes, it really doesn't take long to bake cookies. I can bake cookies from scratch start to finish and clean my kitchen all within an hour.

I think its sad that so many people think that its such a big deal to make something from scratch. There are a lot of people who dont even know what a good homecooked meal tastes like.

i used to bake a lot and take things to work at other jobs, not my current one. all the young guys would gobble them up. those that still lived at home had mothers that never baked and the guys out on their own didn't bake for themselves. some of the women thought the same thing, that i must never sleep between the baking and chasing 2 young kids around, working and keeping a house. but my kids have always helped me even if it was just dumping in the choc chips. i just say thanks and enjoy the cookies.

I baked some cookies last night, too. I tossed the butter on the counter to soften while I was making dinner. I creamed the butter and sugar and whatnot in my mixer also while making dinner. I rolled the dough into a log in wax paper and then stuck it in the freezer while we ate dinner, then after dinner, I just had to slice it and put it in the oven, which was still hot from when I cooked dinner. Then I ran upstairs and put PJs on the little ones while the cookies baked. It really only took me a bit of extra time. It isn't like we stand in front of the oven the whole time they are baking.
I don't know why people think it takes so much time to make things from scratch. It probably would have taken me longer to drive to the grocery store, get a cart, get the cookies, wait in line forever, buy the cookies and drive back home. lolNicole, Mom of 4 ages 6-16~

I don't think I've EVER baked something and NOT done a million other things whilst doing that--laundry, cooking dinner, cleaning....... Do people honestly think you need to set aside time to stand there and stare at something baking? How would our foremothers have done it?...on the farm with 10 kids, and doing wash in a tub?
I DO notice as I get older, though, it is hard to remember to keep one eye on the oven. I have burned more bisquits and cookies lately.
I was a SAHM, and on snow days, all of the neighborhood kids (and my 2 sons) went out and had snowball fights and built forts till they were frozen. Then they came into MY house, and I baked cookies from scratch(well, I started them while the snowfort was in progress) and made homemade cocoa (the kind with real cocoa and milk like my mom made for us) and did it all while I dried their snow-clothing over heater vents and in the dryer. There would be 8-10 boys at my house. Sometimes it took 2-3 batches of cookies. The neighbor kids were all over at our pool every day in summer too. I love the way that the women of our neighborhood would say to me, "yeah, but YOU only had two kids!" Right (I thought), and 2 of YOURS..and 2 of yours....

When I was working and single, I always brought in home-baked foods -- and I always drew a crowd. I don't think it's a coincidence that I married someone from work...

When I worked at the hospital, all the ladies cooked from scratch. Always a choice of wonderful foods brought in to sample. Not always the healthiest choices(usually laden with fat ) but they were good. Those were the days.

When I baked - just after dinner and my bf was over he would always wonder WHEN I had time for it. It does take 5 mins to mix your ingredients and what? 10-12 mins to bake? Only enough time to sort something or prep veggies etc or do dishes. Its not that hard!!
I think when people make those comments 'gee, it must be nice...' it shows that they lack the self ambition or confidence to try to do it themselves and are hoping to mooch (aka play the victim card, if its really that easy then you can make me some next time to take home right??) When I was single and worked I used to bake goodies and meals for myself and bring the excess to work and let them finish it off. Once I made a cheesecake and let them have at it! I figured it would keep me from gaining weight, too. One lady said she would pay me anything I asked if I would make a cheesecake for her to serve her company from out of town one weekend. I charged her $15 and she happily paid me!
I had to ask for a ride to work when my car broke down and the guy wouldn't take money from me so he agreed to let me make him a lunch like I did for myself (he was single too) and boy did everyone get jealous over our lunches. One worker used to come by me all the time at lunch begging for any scraps of whatever it was I was eating.
I had to hide after awhile just to eat lunch in peace! So I agree with creating monsters at work!!
