Default Power outage, 1000.00 TV and my renters insurance

Awhile back I bought a 56 inch 1000.00 TV from a guy on creagslist for 300.00. He just wanted to get it out of his living room and I was the only person in three days that talked with the guy on the phone and was willing to pick it up.

I have had this TV since February.

The electric company turned off my power this morning. I sent them the money weeks ago. Sometimes it takes awhile for a company to cash checks so I was worried about it. I even added extra so the last bill when I move out would be already covered. The money was never taken out of the bank account and they never sent me a notice saying that they were shutting off the electricity. If I had gotten a paper or something I would have called them asking what was going on.

So this morning as my uncharged phone was dieing I called them, paid them and got promised that my electricity would be turned back on before the busyness day was out. I then canalled the check at the bank. Twenty minutes later I pulled out a magazine I was reading last month only to find the missing check wedged between the pages, stamp and everything.

So, ya… its all my fault.

My TV won’t turn on now. The fuse has been blown and I have renters insurance. I read that if you get a power outage and it destroys something {yes I was using a serge protector} that you can have your renters insurance cover it. But I didn’t pay my electric bill and it got murdered… this is my fault.

Never hurts to ask…. You think my insurance will pay out on this? I doubt it but it would be stupid to not ask and then find out that yes I would have.

It doesn't matter WHY the electricity went out. You pay for insurance to cover loss.

I am confused, if your TV won't turn on because of a blown fuse, don't you just need to replace the fuse. I don't see why you would need insurance to cover a blown fuse.

The fuse is inside of the tv. Theres most likely more wrong with it. The fact is the tv is broken. Its not working and most likely can not be fixed. This has happened to my mom before. I am quoting her.

I'm assuming she would need a service call to replace the fuse. I don't blame ya, I wouldn't want to go digging around inside a $1k tv!

I can't hurt to call & ask. Just asking doesn't go against your policy.

Just be careful filing claims. Insurance companies have been know to drop people after even one claim. Which makes absolutely no sense to me, but it happens.

Don't tell the insurance co. that you didn't pay your bill. Tell them that there was a power surge, and it blew the fuse. That's true, actually. When the power goes out, you need to unplug everything, or the surge will damage them when it comes back on.

So that's the truth, not a lie. It doesn't matter why there was a power surge, there was, and it damaged your t.v.

we had a surge happen once and all we had to do was unplug it and plug it back in. Have you tried that?

Either way, I hope you can get it working again soon!
