Default the best types of wood?

What are the best types of wood?

I have been looking around at scratch and dent stores as well as Cregslist and I keep finding some really great deals on bookcases and other furniture for friends and such.

And I don’t really know what constitutes good quality.

Lets say I walk into slumberland, hom store, or even Macys furniture… what do I look for?

What’s the deal with the pine furniture in the back of Jo Ann Fabrics?

I have a solid oak desk. Is that a good thing?

I have a pine kitchen nook from fleet farm. Is that good quality? It looks a little rickety to me.

pine is a soft wood and can dent easy. you want a quality wood, but you also want good construction too. you can have the best wood possible but if it's put together badly it will still look like crap.

For bookshelves I would opt for a hardwood such as oak. Books are heavy and soft woods and partical boards will sag over time. Nails and screws are always better than glue. Wood pegs are okay for holding up shelves but metal have a longer life.
If something seems rikkity can you add screws to it. Clamp it tight then add them. Perhaps the item should be anchored to the wall. Either screws throught the back or L brackets added to the top will help to stablize it.
