North Dakota? Looking for input...
My Dh and I *may* have the chance to move to North Dakota (possible work opportunity). It wouldn't be for about 8 or 9? months, but we're just thinking we should find out some basics before we get too into the idea (IF it even becomes possible). (It could be Minot, Grand Forks, Bismarck, or Fargo...that's all we know).
So...if you live there or know someone who is...this is what we're wondering about...
1. Are the people friendly?
2. How are the taxes?
3. How do grocery costs, phone, internet, etc. weigh in?
4. How are the colleges in those towns?
5. Are the airports in each of those towns in good/bad areas of town?
6. Are those towns safe? Crime levels?
Any other info would be appreciated!!
Thanks so much!! Don't know what I'd do without my Frugal Family!

O.K., I'm not real big on cold or isolation, so I'm saying that sounds more like a nightmare than an opportunity. LOL

Well I don't know but those area's are going to be smaller and some more remote than Anchorage......where you are you have access to almost everything......there are some good sites if you google, North Dakota, demographics you can see a lot of information about the state. If I see anything interesting I will post again.

They have Krispy Kreme, dollar stores, and Super-Walmart! Sounds great to me!! hehehe We don't have any of those... We have a regular Walmart...but, I got to shop at a Super-Walmart in Oklahoma and another in Nevada...wow is there ever a lot more to choose from!
We've looked at city-data.com for general info...it's hard to find accurate tax info. And I'd like the perspective of someone who lives there or has been there...ya just can't get that out of statistics.

first reply didn't go thru argh! Dh worked for a seismograph co in No Dakota many years ago & it's on his list of places not to live because of the weather extremes. The highs are super high & the lows, super low. he couldn't stand the cold & he's an outdoor guy. Not sure where in the state he was, maybe where you go it's milder.

I grew up
in NE Montana. Yes - People are very friendly. You will have no problem with the "cold".! Infrastructure (roads) are good and taxes are cheaper than they are where I am now (Phoenix). Montana does not have sales tax but I believe ND has both sales and income tax. That said, whenever I go home, I'm absolutely shocked at how much cheaper certain things are: meat, gas, eating out, services. It is difficult to to buy good fresh veggies in the winter (how unlike Alaska, I'm sure). People in that area are definitely very self reliant and take the time to care about one another. The last time I was home, I stopped to visit my sister and brother's grave, as I was leaving town. The graveyard caretaker went out of his way, came over to talk to me and make sure "I was okay". Personally, I'd go for it!!

Well, I have lived in 3 out of 4 of those places - and visited the fourth. I currently live in Bismarck, and can't think of moving anywhere else! Ask me any questions and I will give you honest answers - the good AND the bad.

We were...cause our friends were moving there, taking our Goddaughters. That fell through for them...the whole point for us was to stay with them. They'd still like to move to the lower 48...sooooo, we're hoping we can convince them to come with us!
This job possibility for us just came up last week! Out of the blue! Eek!
