New library hours
Well, due to the tax cut we have gotten (or they claim that is the reason) they are now closing the library a half hour earlier on Mon. and Wed. and at 3:30 on Fri. and Sat., and closed on Sunday.
I'm willing to bet that none of those artsy fartsy programs in Sarasota got cut back. This makes me so mad. We have so many kids in this town now, and what about them having to do school projects on weekends? Not everyone has a computer in their home.
Florida is getting more family unfriendly by the day.

That's just stupid. They should open later not close earlier. Those poor school children.

I have always thought libraries should be open 7 days a week and until the wee hours of the morning. Sure it might be expensive, but if the libraries were open other things could be cut. Libraries really should be a community gathering place, kind of like the Town Hall used to be.

I'm from the capital city of SC, Columbia, and our library was open 7 days a week, from 8:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Not all the smaller branches had those hours, but you could always go to the main library, which was AWESOME!
I like living in a smaller town, but the services here just suck. I'm sure the Sarasota city branches have better hours, even though all those freakin' rich people go to bed like at 8, and they roll up the streets.
Sometimes I think I'd like to go back to a larger city.

I suppose with all of the budget cuts going on, it's lucky that the library just didn't shut down all together. I agree that the kids are the ones who seem to be the ones who suffer the most whenever they do things like this. They should think more of the kids.

Wow that really bites! My old library used to have hours like that and some around here still do, but now that I have a card from the Carnegie Library of Pittsbugh system I am spoiled. My card allows me to access over 60+ diff local libraries within like a 70 miles radius. I have about 4 libraries I tend to go to in person (the rest I order books from online and have delivered to my home library) and they are all open 7 days a week. M-R from 8 to 8, F & S from 8-5 and Sun from 1-5. I am spoiled and I know it cause I love going downtown to the main library, which is 3 whole floors just FULL of huge stacks of books! I usually leave with about 15 books or so lol. I am a library addict! So many resources, so many things to do, and all for my favorite word: FREE! For those of you who have libraries with really crappy hours I would check and see if your library is online. Most libraries are today...you can browse and order all your books online and have them delivered to your local library for you to pick-up. Of course its not as much fun as browsing and putzing thru the shelves yourselves but it can help when time, or lousy hours are a factor. I've been known to order books and browse catalog at 1 am when I cant sleep from restless legs. Hope that idea helps a little at least even though I know its only a second best option to actually going yourself or having fun taking your kids book hunting.

We are on interlibrary loan here too. We can get stuff from all the universities and some other places too, but I don't know all of them. I just got a book from interlibrary loan about gardening.

I wouldn't mind if our libarary had longer hours, but they're definitely better than what yours just got cut to! Ugh! Sorry they did that! Good grief!

We have interlibrary loans, too (also to pull from university). I use it all the time...just LOVE it!
I'm gonna go to the library tomorrow on lunch...woo-hoo!
