How to predict the weather
I would like to know some old meths about how to predict
the weather for the winter. For example: when it snows and the snow sticks to the south side of the tree, the snow will not stay. If it sticks on the north side then the snow is here to stay.
Does anyone know how to read the caterpillar of the colors that it shows? I would like to here some more tails of the weather.

My grandma always told me that the black part of the caterpillar from the eyes back tell how short or long our fall will be until winter hits. Then the brown parts indicate how long winter will last...if the black fur towards the end is shorter winter will go right up until spring. If the black part towards the end is longer than we will have a spring.
I don't know if this is how anyone else reads the caterpillar, my grandma seemed to think it went this way

If the cows are standing around a tree, it's going to rain.

"Red in the morning, sailors take warning, red at night, sailors delight." If the clouds have a red cast in the morning, it usually means rain or stormy weather, it they are redish at night nice weather will follow.
Also, if there is a haze around the moon at night, snow or rain in 24-48 hrs -I've noticed this works nearly every time. I saw it last night, BIG haze and we are supposed to get snow tonight.
Thanks for the website rompers1. Very interesting.

I know that this doesn't help any of you - but when my arthritis in my hips is especially painful - I can be sure that a front will be through in a day or two. That would mean rain or snow usually........it has something to do with the change in the barametric pressure. My kids used to think that I was magic!

When the swamps are full snow can come any time.
When cows stand all the same way with their backs to the wind a storm is comming from that way.
If the cows are standing that way on a side hill its getting ready to storm
When you hear the locust winter will be within 6 weeks.
When you read catapillers its the
size of the black for short or long winters.
Watch your animals if they are really hyper then the next day it will rain.
( Its pouring today and my cat was been jumping all over yersterday )
Thats how we predict here on the farm.
Oh yeah forgot. If you see a paper wasp nest look how high up it is the tree
snow will reach the bottom. So if its down real low you won't have much snow that winter.Last edited by Holly; 10-23-2007 at 08:16 AM.

I also can predict weather changes because they make my right ankle ACHE big time, I've twisted it badly many times and messed up the joint. If hubby sees me limping he knows a weather change is coming

And yes animals can REALLY sense the change in barometric pressure, it's interesting to watch. But even more fun is watching them on the first CRISP morning, watch out, that frolicking can get you hurt.
My best friend says first frost will be 6 weeks after you hear the first katydid singing.

frugalfarmwife, I can also use my right ankle. Same thing, I've sprained it about 4 times, never the other one. dh uses his left knee.
I can rely on the old sailor's rhyme (red sky at dawn, sailors take warn,--- red sky at night, sailors delight). It usually works, but there isn't always a red sky, and then what'd'ya do?

We also watch the farm critters and how much of a winter coat they grow, if my little horses ears disappear in the winter fuzz it's gonna be a COLD one!! This year the haircoats on the horses (and the cattle) are pretty short so I really don't think it's going to be that bad.
We've had years the horses looked like wooly mammoths, those have been BITTER COLD ONES!!
