Convincing you Family?
I have been reading everything I could on this site today. It is so nice to know there are other people out there that want to live a simple and frugal life. That I am not some weird cheapo who is just trying to cheat their family out of a "good" life. My family has been very resistant to the changes I want to make in my life, despite the fact that they really have no money! They are still living on credit to "impress" people that in reality they don't even really like! I say, "Who cares?".
I pulled out a handful of coupons, and my mother turned away and acted like she didn't know me. Yes, people had to wait, but I saved 128 dollars and had several people in line actually asking me how I do it, when I walked only paying $37.29. My mother said never to use them when we go shopping together again. *sigh* How did you convince your family? Anyone else have problems?

Most of my family is frugal, so I don't have any good advice. Except for the fact that I don't care what others think, they are not paying my bills.
I did however want to say welcome and good luck!! You will love it here.Robbin

I say just keep doing what you are doing. If she dosen't want to go with you when you use coupons tell her ahead of time so she can not go or set in the car. I don't understand people like that. Why would you rather give your money away to the stores when you can keep it yourself by using coupons. I would rather take the money you save with the coupons and donate it to a good cause as to just let the grocery have it. Know what I mean. I use coupons all the time. One day she will look at you and say man thats a nice car you just bought and you can say yeah thanks I bought it with all the money I safed with coupons but I guess you would be to embaressed to ride in it then.

I would just very nicely and politely tell your mom that while you respect that she does not use coupons, she needs to respect that you do and that you will not change your shopping habits for her.

Welcome and congratulations. You did great and did a great service to yourself by saving that money. I would say don't try to change mom's mind, and like someone said already, just let her know that you won't be shopping with her when you have to use coupons.
I suppose you could allow her to pay you the money you would save with coupons. lol

Firstly, welcome to the Village! You did great with the savings! As for your Mom's response, there are always going to be people like that. Don't worry - think about what you'll be able to buy, or the nest egg you'll have, with all your savings. I just loved the response the other person gave you about riding in the new car - now that was hilarious!! Good going with your coupon savings, and looking forward to learning some tips from you!

Believe it or not, I used to be like your mom. I had a BF once who used to curb shop, and I was appalled! I said that I was the one who threw out the garbage, not the one who picked it up! Things changed for me due to time, health, and circumstance, and now I'm the biggest savings freak of them all. I never was a spendthrift, but now I'm honing my savings skills to a sharp edge.
BTW, welcome! I think I should get you to give ME couponing lessons!

LOL! I don't have savings like that every trip, but I wish I did.
Thank you for your advice and tips about my Mom. I will try and keep it in mind. She bought a few things I actually have coupons for, and I could have saved her money, but she refused. I asked her give me the money and I would pay for them and pocket the $20 savings but she wouldn't do that either. Can't win
It is nice to meet everyone, and I think I will like it here too!

Howdy and welcome, and don't people drive you nuts?

My inlaws were like that, funny, now they've all gone bankrupt, poor poor things. (See, I'm not a very nice person, but they treated me like dirt for years, and now hubby and I are the ONLY financially stable ones in the family, hmmmm)
If I were with you I'd have high fived you all the way out the door on your savings, but then I DO tend to be an embarassing person
You just keep doing what you're doing, and you'll be so far ahead in the race before you know it that you'll blow their "no coupons for me" minds!

It is hard to believe that your mother would rather see you fork another $128 over to the grocery store than "embarrass" her. I applaud your savings. I like coupons, too!

I would have told her if she didn't want you to use coupons while with her, then she can pay for your stuff.
