    Smile Remember the days???

    To Those of You Born
    1930 - 1979

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
    1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.
They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.
Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, booster seats, seat belts or air bags.

Riding in the back of a pick up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.
We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?
Because we were always outside, playing...that's why!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.
No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times,we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.
We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
    Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers problem solvers and inventors problem solvers and inventors ever.
The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

wow. you know my mom used to tell me things like this and id say something... "You'd play outside? But what if you got shot??"

LOL just to freak her out. She was super overprotected of us, to the point were we couldnt do ANYTHING and i felt like a monkey in a cage locked inside the house all the time. Sure wish I had gotten a chance at a carefree, everyday's an adventure childhood like the one above.

Yep, I remember those days. We'd be gone all day playing out with our friends running the neighborhood and come in for dinner, then back out till dark. Mom never worried we'd be snatched.

I remember the first time my kids were in soccer and they gave everyone a trophy for participation. I thought...are you kidding me!

I love the new high-tech era, but I miss the good old days too. Thanks for bringing back some great memories!

~I think alot of those things depend on where and how you grew up, not just when. I was born in the last week of 1979 and was raised a country girl. I played outside all the time but I also had a Nintendo and a computer. It seems a bit wierd to recall in a nostalgic way a time when great safety items were not commonly used. Can you imagine how it would be now if seat belts and helmets and baby-proof items were NOT commonly used? ~

Those were some good times we had.

In the summer we would eat breakfast, play outside till lunch, then go back outside till supper, then out again till it got dark. IF the day was really hot then MAYBE we would play a board game in the house.

I remember Mama letting us watch cartoons very occasionally in the late afternoons right before Daddy got home. Other than that, we didn't watch daytime TV except on Saturday mornings.

And popsicles from the ice-cream man in his truck were 6 cents each.

Yeah, I remember those times. I was just telling the grandkids the other day how I would get up on Saturday to watch TV and we only had one channel.
Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here we might as well dance.

my brother and I would fight over who got to ride/sleep in the back window of our car! We are not very "PC" at our house. Our kids don;t have bike helmets (*gasp*), they don;t have elbow/knee pads, they DO climb trees, and play in the mud OUTSIDE with friends. They ride their bike to the C-store, park, school, and freinds houses (all without a helmet) - imagine that! Just like I did!

My brother and I would get up early on Saturdays and watch the test pattern on TV till the cartoons came on. Does anybody remember doing that?

I DO remember most of this. Now you can't do much of anything without a regulation telling you how to do it.

Ahhh, the good ole days!! Me and my sis's would run all over the neighborhood, and we only had to be home by dark was the rule. And we weren't shot or run over or kidnapped. Imagine!!

We swam in the bay. We played in abandoned fields. We rode our gokart down hilly roads. We always rode in the back of daddy's truck (even to Mexico once). We were always on bikes, or hanging out of trees or jumping off the roof. We had exactly 3 channels and I do remember the test thingy before Saturday morning cartoons came on. Remember Friday Night Videos?? My oldest sis and I would stay up late to watch Billy Squire, lol. Atari was the coolest thing ever invented. And what about when the microwave came out? It was $600 new but was the neatest thing since sliced bread.

And we all survived. Thanks for the memories.

I remember those days too. We would play outside at each others house and play in the creek in the summer. We would ride our bikes or skate to the corner store and get cokes and snacks. The store would trade empty coke bottles for merchandise. Then we got honda mini-trails and rode thru the woods to the country store. We never worried about anybody hurting us. We just watched out for snakes. Does anybody remember watching the wonderful world of disney on Sunday nights?
