BY LAUREL MYERS
The first bad spell of winter weather has claimed the life of a St. Charles man, leaving his widow and five children in dire straits.
Jeffrey Walter Hunt, 38, was killed early Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 535, when the car he was driving collided with a southbound pickup truck at the Nepewassi River bridge, north of St. Charles.
The driver and passenger of the pickup truck were transported to the St. Joseph’s Health Centre with non-life-threatening injuries.
Hunt, his wife, Laura Runge, and their children, ages 13, 12, 8, 5 and 3, had just returned to Canada in July from living in the United States.
Runge, an American citizen, was still in the process of obtaining her Canadian status and a working visa when the accident occurred.
“Upon his death all his accounts were frozen, and because Laura was not on the accounts and being American, she cannot get any access to any of the money,” said the woman’s friend Christina Guindon.
Hunt had been his wife’s sponsor for Canadian citizenship. And though three of their children have Canadian citizenship, they are not old enough to act as a sponsor for their mother, Guindon said.
Unable to gain employment without her working visa and with no access to her husband’s bank accounts, Runge’s financial state is desperate.
To help their friend, Guindon and Melissa Ackerland have set up a trust fund account at the TD Canada Trust in Runge’s name. They are seeking donations from the community to help the Hunt family make it through this traumatic event.

How can they do this? This is obviously his wife and children, why would they freeze accounts it is not like he was killed robbing a bank or something? What is she supposed to do? How exactly is she supposed to survive while they starighten out whatever they need to straighten out? This is money that is family money not "his or hers". Wow, I feel for the family and I will keep saying prayers that this gets handled swiftly.

Sad situation. No one needs the extra stress of the financial worries on top of losing their spouse.
I wonder why all the assets were in his name and not joint?

Hopefully this situation will come to the attention of a Canadian politician (member of parliament???) who will be able to expedite the help that this woman needs.
I'm glad that friends are trying to help by setting up an account for the family.
It's bad enough when there is a death in the family, but when you can't get into the money that is so desperately needed.....
Please keep us posted on this.
