Happy happy dance!
I found a new apartment! It was a case of knowing someone who knew someone.... I mentioned to an old friend that I was looking, and she called a friend, Carol, who had a "cute little place" and a lease ending at the end of December, who would probably be moving out then. I knew Carol years ago too -- the church organist in my nun days. She called the landlord who showed me the place, and he agreed to rent it to me on her recommendation. It's never listed -- he will only rent it to someone who comes recommended. It is a duplex, beautifully maintained, with more storage space than I have ever seen in a kitchen area (!!), about two miles from work instead of ten, and, drum roll, $100 less a month than I am paying now! My rent for this wonderful little place with be an astounding $375. Living room paneling and hardwood floor, a little screened porch in the back, big walk in closet, a kitchen with enough space for an actual table. The neighbors are certified quiet -- a woman in the other part of the duplex who works days (I work evenings) and nurse in a garage apartment out behind; The landlord, who seems like a really nice guy, lives in the house next door. When I talked to Carol, she said he was wanting to do some work in the place. Huh? Seemed fine to me. But I definitely like that attitude!
I haven't signed a lease yet, because we're waiting to see if Carol is going to stay to the end of December, or perhaps leave earlier, but it's been promised. I hate to count unhatched chickens and get excited before my name is on the bottom line, but this is so perfect I can't help doing some preliminary counting at least. It sounds like it is really going to work. And the sooner the better -- I have the two worst neighbors right now, both pretty new, that I have ever had at this place. It's hard to imagine how so few people can make so much noise at 2 a.m.
So, all you kind folks out there -- keep those fingers crossed! I know this is long, but I am very, very, very happy about this! Can't wait to move!Donna

Signing the lease tomorrow - the person there decided I could have it whenever. I'll move either the 7th or the 10th, which means I've got to get it together really fast.
And we will not have any frugal discussions on this topic. I have decided in cold blood that I am going to get some things I have been looking at for a while, some of them not cheap, but I've done mix-n-match and make-do for a lot of years, so I am going to indulge a little. But not over the top I hope!
Thanks for all your good wishes. This is really going to be a great place for me - safe, quiet, cheap, and very nice. Can't wait to get into it!Donna
