Think I Grew Horns Or Something
Was in a store the other day and got a present for My son's girlfriend.
The girl wanted to know if I would like their card and be put on their mailing list. I said sure why not.
She asked for my drivers license so I handed it to her.
Then she asked for a credit card. I said I don't have one.
( thought she was going to hyperventilate) She said you have to have a credit card. Everyone has credit cards .
I told her No and that I didn't want one.. I said if I can't pay cash I don't buy it.
She stared at me like I grew horns.
I told her to forget the store card I wouldn't be shopping ther that much anyway.
I paid cash and left...Last edited by Holly; 11-28-2007 at 06:55 AM.

We are now living in a society that if you want it, go and get it. Even if that means putting it on a cc to do so.

Same for us...
We cut up out credit cards because they were toooo easy for us to spend-spend-spend!! We do have our debit card, but we can't carry it out with us if we hope to not blow our budget. We do have one credit card that charges no fees, that we keep back if my husband has to travel and that's only if the vehicle breaks down or something tragic has happened. I know the feeling when people look at you like your some weirdo -we get those looks too! Whenever I am offered a store card I decline and tell them I don't have a job! That usally shuts them down quick! Plus the interest rate on store cards are stupidly high! :surprise:

I have worked in retail for years. I am willing to bet the "store card" she was referring to was a store credit card. To qualify for most store credit cards, all you need is a major credit card (Visa, Discover, etc.) With a store credit card, you are also on the store's mailing list. She would have been unable to complete the application for the store (credit) card without a credit card from you. At JCPenny (and other stores, I am sure), these applications are all done instantly by just typing the person's, name, address, telephone, and major credit card info into the POS system (cash register computer terminal). You are either approved or declined instantly, a temporary card is handed to you on the spot, and your permanent card arrives in the mail in a couple of weeks.

lol, made me laugh. You are so wierd, hehehehe, don't ya love it! It is sad though that the next genreation thinks credit is the norm and that those who don't use it are wierd or have somethign wrong with them. I am getting tired of the monopoly commercial with the credit/debit card. They push it like it is now so much more convenient to just charge it. Why bother with that hard to use cash...since when was cash so slow and difficult to use??
Glad you turned downt he store card offer.

I do a LOT of things, also, (mainly things related to frugality), that really throw people. Personally I think it's our society that's weird, not you and me and the other FV-ers.

That's just silly for her to respond that way! My DH gets annoyed when a sale person pushes the store card too much. Do you still take cash... if not guess you can put this back on the shelf. Oh & he's so calm dealing with them. Many stores require sales to push their card & reward those who open the most accounts... that's just sad. Wonder if more people will go back to using cash with all the talk about identity theft?

That doesn't surprise me, people about faint when you use cash anymore. Like the money is tainted or something.
A few months back I went out to pay bills and I stopped at Cingular to pay dh's cell and got cash out. The lady about fell to the floor, she said we only take check or debit. I said well I have cash and want to pay his bill.
She said I'm sorry we aren't allowed to accept cash. You do not want to know the words that came out of my mouth. I left and went back to the bank and deposited the money and then called Cingular to pay the bill and I also told them again how I thought American Money was no longer good to pay your bills with.Maggi

This is quite true. We can not pay our rent in cash. Even when we paid the $30 fee for our rental application, it had to be a check or money order. If you think about it, our apartment manager (a woman in her 50's who is alone in the office) would be a prime target for robbery on the first of the month, if they accepted rent payments in cash. I can understand the refusal of some businesses to accept cash. Just having a sign up that says "we keep no cash on the premises" would greatly decrease their likelihood of being robbed.

I had stopped ordering checks and a couple of times paid my rent in cash and got a receipt (they don't take debit at this complex). The manager was dying of AIDS, is in end stage and had gotten himself a nice little coke habit. He stole over $60,000.00 in cash rent payments. Now I don't know who does their books, but if it was my business I'd see the cash missing.
Anyway, I found my receipts and they were copied and put in my file. Some people couldn't find their receipts and were evicted - the insurance company wouldn't pay the losses if the tenants weren't evicted. I am going to testify, when they find him, they just issued a warrant. I'll bet he's not even in Ohio anymore. I ordered more checks right away.
