Any antique dealers out there?
I have a table lamp that I would like to sell on ebay. It's very cute and I'm sure it's an antique. I was wondering of there was anyone here on FV that could take a look at this picture for me and give me whatever information they can. Thanks!

I don't think it's an antique, more like vintage :-) Probably from the late 50's - early 60's. Mid century kitch.

Stinkbug is right, it's not an antique. I bet its 50s.
Still that is popular right now. If you advertise it as "mid-century" and "vintage" you should be able to sell it. Also, check on the metal parts as well as the bottom for a manufacturer's name. Certain names, such as Aladin, Lamb Brothers etc so if you find a name, even if you don't know who it is be sure and mention it because the collectors will know and probably search by the manufacturers they are interested in.
Hope that helps.

Here's a link to an e-bay discussion forum on this: http://forums.ebay.com/db2/thread.js...=1112307266034 (sorry I dont know how to hide the link so all you see is just one 'word' to click on!)
Here's another opinion that I found on that net that sounds about right:
For what its worth Tiffany - I hope you can sell it and get a good offering for itVintage refers to the age of an item, although not in years. For instance, you may have a piece of furniture or jewelry that is of 1920's vintage. In other words, from a particular time or era. Antique refers to the actual age of an item. Many furniture pieces are not considered antiques until they are 100 years old, although automobiles generally are considered antiques at 20 years old. (source: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/49490)

Thanks for the information about the difference between vintage and antique. I had no idea!

I helped an antique dealer all through junior high and high school. Her general rule was something had to be at least 75, preferably 100 years old to be called an antique. Things that were valuable or sought after but not truly old she called "Collectables" like depression glass, old radios, disney and coke stuff etc.
The current use of vintage generally seems means something that is used, older, but not an antique, kinda cool and kitchy, generally mass produced and reflective of pop culture in some way. I don't know for sure but I suspect it was hijacked from the "vintage" clothes dealers cause it sounds better (and more expensive) than " old stuff I found in my grandma's attic"

Very cute lamp! Is it blue or beige? Be sure you don't show both pictures on ebay. Blue is a very poplular color and someone might see the picture and not read your add well and buy it because it shows it's blue and then you would have a mess, kwim?
Anyway. Another way to check the age is to check the plug. Does it have a polarized plug? Is there a label on the lamp that says UL Approved or anything like that? If it does, be sure to put that in your listing. Buyers can also tell the age by the lamp shade fixture. Be sure to take a picture of the lamp without the shade. A person who knows antiques or vintage items could tell right away by seeing that also.
Good luck and hope you get bunches for it!"Success on any major scale requires you to accept responsibity."
