Default Argh -- I hate when they announce snow!

I had gone to the grocery store earlier tonight... I think there was an echo in the store because the shelves were empty. I only needed carrots and apples for DD's lunches this week. (Pantry Challenge this month). I've lived in MA my entire life. The word snow has become as commonplace as oxygen. People were stocking up as if there will be no food ever again... why do people suddenly need 4 gallons of milk? I usually buy less when I know we will have snow or ice because of the risk of power-outages. It took almost 2 hours to make my way through the store, through the line (with just the fruits and veggies) and then... the computers went down -argh- and I had to leave empty handed. If I didn't need them for her lunch, I would have abandoned the quest long before...

At 10:45pm, DD's school computer system called to let us know there is no school tomorrow due to the snow. I went to a local station website and it seems as if all the schools in MA have canceled already...

I know we are suppose to get snow, and I know I would be complaining if the call came in at 6am...

I swear, the more gloom and doom they predict, the less we get... we are suppose to get around 14" at a rate of 1-2" an hour...

Not even a week ago, it was in the 60's!

As I look out the window... nothing... not even a scent of the white stuff in the air. If I wake up tomorrow and there is nothing out there, I think I will scream! If we get slammed with snow, I have to go out anyways... the Old Man is working at the AFB tomorrow and will need a ride to get the company van. <insert dramatic sigh here>

Anyone else having severely changing weather?

We seem to (Ontario here) however its calmed down for a bit. But I recall the past few months where it would snow for 3 days then have a heatwave and melt everything in 3 days and then deep freeze, then the thaw then more snow Our weather system is screwy!

The best thing you can do is be prepared - food, clothes, shelter and entertainment! Go grab a cup of coffee/tea and relax at the village with us

They said that this weekend it was supposed to snow .. now it is going to be snow and ice this week *rme* ... We have yet to get any snow or ice this or last year.

Yet when you went to the store there was no bread, no milk, no eggs, & no cereal. You would think the world was coming to an end *lol*

I live in NC so someone sees a snow flake and its on the news for days and EVERYTHING closes down. Either that or the idiots come out and cause wrecks.

Last time that there was a good heavy snow and power outage there was no school for 2 weeks and no mail service in certain areas for about as long because of ice on shade covered streets.

So what did they do ... they clear cut sides of trees so if we have another ice storm that they will all fall on peoples homes or businesses. Smart thinking *rme*

They came to the prior place we rented and clear cut one tree so bad it died ( our landlord didn't believe us at first cause it was close to fall and a few trees were changing, now he is starting to get a little worried about it ). The leaves changed color the week after they cut the tree and fell then limbs started falling off. The angle that it will fall at it will be hitting the trailer into the living room and front bedroom and whoever parks their vehicle in the drive.

Oh even better to keep the roads from freezing they put salt water on them before the ice or snow is schedualed to hit. It dries into nice white stripes down the road. Cracks me up every time i see it. Of course i grew up in MD where cinder, sand, and salt being put down was a regular event and was a large budget for local government.

I have lived in MA my whole life as well and it just cracks me up. Everyone seems to be afraid when they call for snow due to the Blizzard of 1978. It also seems to me that the news always seems to intensify the reporting.
Yesterday I ran into Stop and Shop and it was packed. I couldn't figure out why. Then I remembered that they are calling for snow.
I woke up this morning around 3 am and there was no snow on the ground.
Then my phone rang at 5:30 am, it was the automated school closing message. I then got up about 6 to see what was going on. I looked out the window and nothing. I turned on the news and or course storm team coverage. It is now 7 and we have a light coating on the cars. I guess they are saying by midday it should intensify.
We will see. I had to take the day off today because there is no school today so if they called off school for nothing I will not be happy.

Here in NJ, we were prepared for 4-8", with of course a delay or snow day for my son, and a "cancel the first few patients" for me....we got a whole half inch! My son was horrified ! I'll look at it as a chance to make more hours today.

Oh, don't get me wrong, here in CT we have a heck of a mess right now. But I live in a valley so we always get a bit more. I know they made the right call to close our schools as it is still coming down pretty hard.

But WTH about calling it off when there is no snow at 6:00am??? I guess it's better than getting to work and having to leave in the middle of a mess a couple of hours later.

Well, enjoy your forced "day off"!

DH and I both work in education, and we have the day off because of the snow. Yeahhhhhh! We don't have any children so a snow day for us really is a treat. It started falling here in NH at about 3 a.m.

Here the schools close for NOTHING. It can be -40º and there WILL be school. There can be 12" of snow, and there WILL be school. But this is a fact of life up here. We have at least 8 mo of winter, so there's no point in closing. In those conditions, lots of kids are absent, but the teachers are there. When it hits a temp where it's -30'ish, I keep the kids home. We make our own days off. I'll not drive wtih toddlers in bad conditions, nor will i send my kids ot bus stops with busses that breakdown in the cold. The school neve rlikes me..lol. But safety first.

No snow here but our weather is wacky. Last week in the 60's and 70's and this week in the 40's and 50's and maybe a chance of some winter precipation on Thursday. I live in NC and if they call for the littlest amount of snow or mixed then people clear the shelves at the grocery store like they are never going to go grocery shopping again. It's crazy. You think people in my area would have learned by now LOL

I dont understand why or how people dont stock up a little bit more in the winter or bad weather seasons. Not saying anything bad against those that cant afford to but a bit of common sense here.

Example I know with my house, as soon as it rains, gets windy or snows our power always cuts out for short periods of time. 30 mins max. Its b/c we have the oldest everything in the city that hasnt been updated. What do I do? I keep a few cases of bottled water on hand in the back room along with batteries, flashlights and candles in almost every other room 'just in case'. Nothing worse then trying to find the wall to head down the hall in the dark to only bump into my dad or kick furniture.

I guess what I dont understand is the panic due to others false sense of security?
