    Default My huge stock pot...

I scorched it. I have burn marks on the bottom of the pan and if I turn it over, they go all the way through me metal. It is stainless steel (I think).

So... I scrubbed it and the burn marks won't come all the way off.

Is it still safe to use?

Do you think the food will taste burnt if I use it to cook with?

Should I just not risk it and go buy another?

If I use it, would that leach lead or whatever is in the metal into my food?

I am so mad at myself for doing that. The pan has been sitting around partially scrubbed after I found out that the burn marks went all the way through.

I burnt a pan really bad once and someone told me to put water in it (enough to cover the burned areas) and add some baking soda. Put it on the stove and heat it to boiling. Let cool just enough to be able to stand to get your hands in the water (BE CAREFUL!) and then scrub with a metal scrubber. It worked for me, getting rid of the burned stuff. I hope you can save it....

I have heard the same thing PrairieRose suggested. I've also heard that for really stubborn stuff, you can add salt to the baking soda and that is suppose to help!

So... If I can't get the burn marks all the way off, is it still ok to use the pan?

I have been scrubbing it with a SOS scrubbing thing, you know, the metal scrubby things with soap in it. Well, it used to have soap in it. I tend to use the soap out of them before they are all used up.

Thank you!!! It so worked!! I threw in some baking soda and scrubbed it to death with my metal scrubby thingy. I have a few tiny little discolored areas left, but that is it!

    Thank you!!!

I used my pot for dinner tonight. I made soup.

Thanks for all the help. I really appreciate it. My other pots and pans just aren't big enough for when I make soup. I am so glad that I don't have to go buy a new pan!

Another pot saved from the landfill and money saved! That's great and I'm glad to know in case I ever do this in the future.

Ok Miss Zakity, inquiring minds need to know... What were you doing when said burning took place? What caused the illeged burning? What was your first response when you observed the alleged blackened pot with yet to be identified remains in it?? Last but not least, what was it in that pot that was so unloved that it didn't require your usual attention to detail?
    That is all...

What were you doing when said burning took place?
probably yelling at unruly boys or breaking up a fight. It would never be because I am a horrid cook.

    What caused the illeged burning?
    inattention, being a bad cook

probably soup... It was scrubbed out after it happened. When I couldn't get it all out, I stuck it in the garage in a cabinet until I had time and could figure out how to get out the burn marks. Nothing I knew was working, so I asked you all.

Good info - thanks for bringing the topic up. BTW, I once burned up 2 pans in a row trying to make hard boiled eggs - I fell asleep both times ;-) The joys of pregnancy!
