Staying at one job for a long time
Just wondering what peoples thoughts are on staying at the same job for a long time? I've been at the same job for ten years. I started in my early 20's as a care aide and that's what I'm still doing. For me there are quite a few benefits to being there so long. Such as:
-high senority which makes my position very stable
-part-time and strait days (pretty much my choice if I want full-time)
-a union
-lots of vacation time and stats
-highest pay for this position
-pension
-some benefits
On the down side:
-I'm a little bit bored
-It's hard not to get involved in the politics of the place after so long(but I try extremely hard not to)
-Working with same co-workers so long it's hard not to find some of thier habits annoying
-I hate gossip but everyone does it and we all know far too much about each other lives.

It can have it's positives and negatives staying put for a while, for me the positives are:
job stability
being in the "know"
increasing IRA
Negatives:
newcomers can make more than I have made because of pay increase rate (why I left old job)
feeling that I have to explain some things 50+ time to newer employees--things I've been doing for a long time and honestly it would be easier just to keep doing rather than explain

I'm not currently working, but my family all stays at jobs forever!
My dad just retired after being at his business for 55 years. My brother now runs it, he's been there for 30. My sister and her dh have been in their business for 20 years, plus she has another job she's been at for 15. My dh has been at his current job for 10 (he loves it!) and in his profession for 17. My one SIL has been at his job for 14....my other SIL can't hold a job for more than 3 months!!! (don't get me started....)
I recently saw an ad for employment that requested *stable job histoy* - no more than 3 jobs in the last 18 months!!!Stinkbug

Growing up I basically thought as long as you did your job well and went to work everyday you had a job for life. Unfortunately, when I started with the 9-5 job with benefits I also started during the years of Lay-offs and the whole new terminology reoganization was just starting. So my idea of a job for life went out the window.
Every company I worked at there were lay-offs. I think it is great that you have established yourself as a good worker and have longevity in your current position.
It is up to you to decide, maybe there will be a time you could take a promotion, pay raise through finding a different place to work at.
I remember one woman telling me she always found a different job every 4 years basically for better pay.

Hubby and I both stayed at our jobs a long time. He taught for 36 years, and I was at my school for 23 years ( and at another school for 5). Teachers have to establish their reputation with the students, and it takes a while to do this. Once established, teaching becomes much easier. Both of us were in good systems, and worked with wonderful people. We both felt valued by our administrators. Pay for teachers is typically lower than other professions, but we had enough and had good benefits. Plus it offered a good retirement savings program.
So I really don't know if we qualilfy as "long-timers" or not, but I think we must be close!Spiritual:

My last job, office manager for an opera company (now THAT was a colorful job!) lasted 6 years, and I've been at my current job for 5.5 years. Some of my benefits have increased somewhat over time, and I feel like I have relatively good job security. The library has to remain open evenings for the hospital and med students, I like the hours, don't mind working alone when short staffed, and with no family commitments, I can pick up any shift that needs filling. We have a wonderful director who has made it clear that she appreciates that and has gone out of her way to shaw that appreciation. I love the job and I'm not going anywhere until I have to!

I was at a job for 3 years (the longest so far). I have been at my current job for 8 months now- I hope to be at this one for at least a few years or longer.
Jobs just aren't as stable as they used to be...between people relocating and lay offs it's tough to gain longevity anywhere.
My father just retired early after 33 years with the same company because they are going through the millionth round of layoffs and he didn't want to risk losing his job.

I've been at my current job for 17 years -- and I'm one of the lowest seniority people there. At my job (critical care RN) people either love it and stay forever. . . or come , decide they hate it and leave within a year.

I used to work for the State of California for about 20 years; but I would transfer from one department to another about every 4 years. That way I would take the written exams and be able to promote up the ladder. It was nice because I kept my seniority and benefits but was able to do another job. That way things didn't get boring, I really enjoyed working for the state and helping people.

Dh has only had 2 jobs in 22 years. He wont jump unless the company goes under. I like it that way, provides stabillity and lots of vacation...although he doesn't take much of it.

I will be at my present job 24 years next month. I imagine I'll be there until I decide to retire.
