Exclamation Cheaper to replace than repair!

I am really surprised. I called all over pricing out the cost of having a zipper replaced in DD2's winter jacket. The going rate appears to be between $16 and $20. Just the materials are around $8. My Mom would be happy to fix it but she's in Arkansas. (Drat!)

Today I was at the grocery store and they had a nice winter coat in her size reduced to $12! I couldn't believe it. The thrifty part of me really thinks it should not be this way - it just isn't logical! The green part of me thinks I should fix the old coat anyway and use it. But the part of me that says, "Dummy! You can't sew - buy the coat!" is the part that won.

At least the "winner" was clear and you didn't have to fuss around. Think of old cars- after a while you can't tell whether it's better to fix them or replace them!

well when you think many years ago people fixed their shoes and only had so many pairs so they had to last, and were made well. So it waorth to fix them. Now everythins is manufactured so cheap and fast , so disposible that for the consumer to just but new again.
But yes that was good deal at $12 for a winter coat. WTG!!! Most times its cheaper for my hubby to buy new winter wear for work then get it fixed .

I'm having the same problem. My boys blow through zippers like they are disposable or something! I have three winter coats and two jackets in the closet that have nothing wrong w/ them other than they need new zippers.

My mom has been showing me how to use my sewing machine. My intent is to buy a new zipper & fix them all before next winter (they will fit youngest ds by then). Heavy duty zippers by themselves are rather pricey too!!

I have a purse I love and the lining needs to be replaced and I'm in the same situation it's more expensive to fix it than buy a new one. I still might have it fixed or try to repair it myself .
