Default Whole Food to eliminate plastic bags.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/23/bu...l?ref=business

I thought this was an interesting read. I've been meaning to reuse the ones I have and not get anymore.

    I agree with this.
I actually take my own bags with me INTO stores.
I get a lotta odd looks & such, but it's easier for me & friendlier for the environment. I do this mostly in stores where I'm buying mostly foods or small products.

Some large dept stores around here won't allow you to because of fear of theft. But I usually carry a medium sized bag w/other bags in it (cloth of course), some are small enough to keep in my purse.

Most of Europe does not distribute bags for free to their paying customers... so you'd better be prepared to pay or just not have anything.
That's where milk-crates, boxes, bags come in handy.

I'm glad they are doing away with plastic! I carry my Trader Joe's canvas bags into every store I go into. I get looks too but most of the cashiers I have dealt with make positive comments to me about them!! I am finding that most of the stores I go to are now selling canvas bags!!

OMG! I didnt realize there were locations in Canada. All I ever did was speak of this and Trader Joe stores LOL Im thinking ROADTRIP to scope it out! Thanks for posting the article

I use my PC black cloth bags for almost everything. Grocery and shopping of course! Tote for work. Weekend bag with a change of shoes/clothes. Library. Farmers Markets/Flea Markets. They're pretty big I think its just a matter of time until all the stores switch over but for now its a huge contest of which store's bag you're carrying. Almost like a fashion statement. But its all for a good cause.

When I shopped at Publix today I noticed they are selling food totes for $.99 as well.

They gave me no issues with my totes or recycled platic bags.

I lived in Germany for 3 years and you had to bring your own bags or pay for them at the check out.

I have my reusable Walmart bags that I take shopping with me. It's just that shopping sometimes gets to be a spur of the moment thing, and I don't always have them with me. I occasionally get plastic bags because I reuse them alot, but most of the things I reuse them for I can use the non-disposable ones too. Like an overnight bag, moving bag (I've moved lots of times lately) it was like a $1 tote bag really. The only thing I'd still use plastic for is trash bags, and changing the kitty litter.

I wish more places would encourage byo-bags. Last time I went to Wal-mart, they tried to put my one tiny lipstick purchase in it's own bag. They didn't want to let me walk out of the store without it. At least you can recycle the plastic ones at most of the grocery stores around here.

I recently brought 4 tote bags to use at the grocery store. I love them and use them everywhere. I tired of those plastic sacks. We use them in them as garbage bags, but you only need so many.
One grocery store in town gives you $0.05 for bringing in your own bags and the other store gives you strange looks.

    Julie,

Your thought is pretty much mine. I'm just sick of having so many of those bags everywhere. Even if I used them (and I do) for garbage for the small cans in the bathrooms it would take me months to use them all up.

I did take a bunch to a recycle drop off at Walmart yesterday and brought my own bags and used the self check out. That's about the easiest way to do it at our WM.
