Default Central heat is highly over-rated!

Well, the delay in fixing my heat may not have been a good idea. It is now "kaput" and they cannot get the part to fix it until Monday. Brrr... Of course it had to happen on the coldest weekend so far this year.

    However......that being said......

I have learned a valuable lesson. I don't need my house to be nearly as warm as I have been keeping it. I have been running a space heater in the room I am in, as well as doing a lot of baking, drying my clothes in the dryer, etc. I have put towels around the door and over the stained glass windows and with no heat whatsoever fom the central unit, the house is maintaining a temp of 63. Not warm and toasty, but far from freezing!

The girls are with their grandmother this weekend so I don't need to worry about them. If they were here it would really bother me to not have heat in the house.

I'll keep you posted. I am kind of interested to see what kind of temp we are at on the 3rd day with no heat. Leave it to me to make this some kind of weird experiment!

Ouch! I hope they are able to fix it on Monday. If it gets too cold, you go see Grandmother, too!

I agree, if you lose too much heat, you should probably go sleep over Gramma's too

I agree with those above, Be Careful! I just saw an article somewhere last week about a woman in the midwest that died from exposure, in her own home because she didn't want to turn on the heat. We've lost heat twice this year, but we live in the 'south' and extreme temps for us are lows in the low '20s(Fahrenheit). If you are too uncomfortable go be with g'mom.

I don't think this grandma would have me, she is on dad's side, lol.

It did get pretty cold in here last night. The internal temp of the house dropped to 53. So I guess today is the day I will meet the challenge of cleaning my room from top to bottom since I can go in there with a space heater and be perfectly cozy.

I am about to start doing some baking, since the oven will warm up the house some, as well, I am drying some clothes in the dryer, so that should help too.

Sigh. What a waste of a perfectly good weekend, spent huddling in my room.

I feel for you - literally. Last week my heater went kaput and it was 5 days before it was fixed. We are in California, and the kids and I are cold wimps even though it didn't get below 55F in the house we were still pretty unhappy.

One thing we did is have a fire in the fireplace. I put an Wanted add in freecycle for firewood, and a kind soul gave us wood. That helped a lot.

Daisygirl, be careful with the little heater too, check to cord to make sure it isn't hot etc. Keep cooking, etc. and hopefully it will be okay.

63 is warmer than we keep our house w/ the heat LOL. And we are in Northern NY where it is not unusual to get into the double negative temps (-10, -20, -30 etc) without the wind chill.

We keep our house at 59 with no ill effects

Hooray! The heat guy is here and fixing my heat right now. We are down to 43 in the house, and that is bloody cold. I wimped out and we camped over at a friend's house last night.

I have learned a really important lesson - I don't need to keep this house nearly as warm as I have been. I think my gas bill will thank me after this.

Oh, and I only had to take $270 from my emergency fund, which I will be able to replace on the 1st! Yay! (Sure glad I had it!)
