Default need help with skunk smell

DD called me and her dog got hit with a skunk. They got the dog cleaned just fine but unfortunately, the smell is in their entire house. Evidently the dog got hit and came inside the house before they realized what had occurred.

Does anyone have any suggestions what all to use to clean the house to remove the odor? They have used bleach, vinegar and amonia so far. Also febreeze and opening the windows as much as possible with the deep freeze we are experiencing.

    Any suggestions are welcome!

    Oh, thats really nasty!

We had one hit the outside of the house, but not inside.

The only thing I can suggest is to put bowls of vinegar around the house. It is suppose to absorb smells. I think you'd have to change them often. It might help get some of it out.

Sorry I can't be any more help.

I found the following information that may help you.

White vinegar or hydrogen peroxide counteracts the natural oil in skunk spray. A solution of vinegar or peroxide will dissolve and remove the odor-causing oils instead of just spreading them around. Try this mixture:

1 liter (or quart) white vinegar OR 3% hydrogen peroxide (peroxide may cause bleaching)

    1/4 c. baking soda

    1 tsp. dish detergent

I was going to suggest baking soda or vinegar.

A friend who lives where it is hot lost a gallon of milk in her minivan (under the back seat). In the heat, it exploded. The car reeked so badly that they were all dying when they rode in it. I told them about the baking soda and the vinegar and the peroxide thing. She said that the baking soda and vinegar thing worked great.

You can also leave trays of charcol briquetts around and change them everyday. They absorb smells as well. Normally I would say you can then return them to the bag and reuse them but I wouldn't do that with skunk smell.

Washing things in tomato juice also works.

Finally, I would tell your daughter to hit the dollar store and get several boxes of mothballs. She should sprinkle them around her property, esp. sheds, the base of the house and any place a skunk might hunker down for warmth or be finding food. They don't like the smell and will leave.

Hubby got hit by one once & came in the house to take off his clothes & wash, wth was he thinking? Only thing that helped us was time. Maybe one of those things like oust spray would help "neutralize" the odor.

Next time this happens to Dh, he's getting naked outside & I'm hosing him down, lol.
