Default When sick as a child...what did your parents do to make you feel better?

Right now I am trying to fight off whatever I am coming down with. As I was reaching into my pantry to get chicken broth, I grabbed a Tobberone bar and started to laugh. I immediately was taken back to when I was little and sick. I got to stay home from school, my dad would come home from work to check on me with comic books, coloring book just to make me feel better. (If I was really lucky a small toy was involved.) Plus I got to stay in my parents room and snuggle up in the bed and watch TV all day.

So does anyone have any memories of what your parents did when you were sick as a kid to make you feel better?

My mom made me clean the house while she watched her soap operas. Seriously. I never stayed home from school because school was much easier, especially when you're sick.

My Mom would spoil us. Normally we didn't use straws, but when we were sick she would fix our drinks in a glass with crushed ice (she had to use a hand crank ice crusher) and we would get a straw. She would make jell-o for us in little molds (stars, hearts). We got to lay on the couch in the den and watch TV. She would bring us stacks of books to read. We would read to ourselves and she would read to us, too. Cool, damp rags to put on our foreheads. My Mom enjoys having someone around to take care of. It is hard on her now that we have all moved out and my Dad passed away 6 years ago. She has 8 grandchildren that she tries to take care of and spoil, but it's not really the same for her as having someone in the house to do things for. We, myself and my two brothers, had a great childhood. We didn't have everything, but we had enough. And our parents, especially our Mom, spent a lot of time with us.

An old 'aunt' (who really wasn't our aunt but would bring us kids each our own little baggies of grapes and candies when she visited) brought us a stuffed white rabbit she'd gotten in Germany a long time ago. It looked like a real rabbit but with long, silky white fur. She told us it was to sleep with whoever got sick and he would make them better, so he only came out on those occasions. We didn't remember his German name so we just called him Sick Rabbit. So when sick, we got to have Sick Rabbit, a tv tray beside our bed with a glass of gingerale and a box of tissues. Mom made lots of trips refilling the gingerale, bringing Tylenol, toast and scrambled eggs, taking temperatures and so on.

Mother would always make homemade tomato soup when we were sick. I'm sad to say that I never learned how she made it. All I know is that she used tomato juice that she had canned to make it. There was no comparison in her soup and Campbell's soup.

Mom would set us up with a few coloring books and crayons, or books when we were older. She'd bring us yummy soups and grilled cheese. She'd sit and rub my back till i fell asleep. Can't imagine how her arm wouldn't have fallen off doing that. but she'd sit gently rubbing my back till i drifted off to sleep.

I had the flu two or so weeks ago, i cried myself asleep missing that.

~I used to love being sick because I'd get spoiled rotten. I'm one of 5 children that only had one tv so it was great to lay on the couch all day watching what I wanted to watch! My mom would also go down to the corner store to get 7up for me(we never had soda in the house). She'd also make this yummy egg custard that had vanilla and cinnamon in it. It's a bummer being sick now cause nobody takes care of me.~

My mom would make me milk toast
for breakfast. I would watch tv also
and lay on the register ( heat with a blanket and fall asleep ).
My heart problem always seemed to make me cold blooded.

When we were small and was sick with a cold or sore throat our mom would juice a lemon into a cup and add sugar and hot water so we could sip it. It always made us feel better.

It seems like anytime I was sick my mom would take me to the doctor and I'd get a shot in the bum. But, to make up for it she would take me to McDonalds to get a chicken nugget happy meal.

My mom would bring in the little tv and put in our room. We would get lunch in bed and watch tv all day. Sigh. Why can't I be 10 again. Now when I am sick I still have to work and there are still 2 little ones that need to get taken care of.

I remember curling up on the couch and watching TV. Mom would make me grill cheese sandwiches and soup (usually tomato or chicken noodle).
