How to eat crow... (long but interesting)
No... this is not a recipe for serving those funny looking black feathered poop-dive-bombers...
On the way home today, I stopped to put an application in at the convenient store I use to work at in 2001... until I walked out and quit.
The girl at the counter smiled as she took my application and said to me as I walked out... "You use to work here?" I smiled, nodded and said yes... then I went home... I figured I wouldn't hear from him again, since I quit all those years ago.
The other woman who works there called me and asked me a few questions about when I worked there, and ... why I left. I explained to her why I left... here's the story...
I worked 5-close 3 nights a week and either open/close weekends. I was basically working there 36 hours a week on top of the 40 hour salary job I had and the private nursing job I had 2 nights a week (yes, I worked a lot back then...) The job at the store was for extra money and it was fun.
On Wednesday nights it was so busy that I had a steady stream of customers from 6pm-11pm when I had to lock up and close. I asked the owner if he can get someone to work 6-10 to stock on Wednesdays since it was so busy I never got a chance to leave the register. He did. When Wednesdays started slowing down, there was no need for 2 people on that night. I had 2 other sources of income, so it wouldn't have mattered to me that he gave that night to the woman I asked to come in and work with me... it was how I found out that I wasn't working Wednesdays that prompted me to quit.
I walked in early to start stocking up the coffee service area (something I did off the clock, just so I could have a more productive shift). I finished the coffee area and was behind the counter getting the papers ready to do a lottery/register/safe count... I was there for at least 15 minutes, standing next to the owner. We have a communication notebook next to the counting area where people request to have time off, the owner writes information for sales or new products etc... thats when I noticed there was a notice about me not working Wednesdays anymore...
I turned to the owner and asked him why he didn't call me at home last night or even at my office that day to tell me I didn't have to work that night. He shrugged and said "It's in the notebook" and went back to reading his paper.
At that point, I felt as if I was not a valued as an employee. I worked hard for him and not once did they lose their liquor license or even get a warning when I was there because I would not make a sale without an ID, I didn't care if they were Grandma Moses herself... no ID, no sale. (not my proudest moment coming up...) I took the key off my keyring, put it on the notebook and wrote "I quit" and walked out saying nothing. He called me 5 minutes later and asked me why I walked out to which I answered "It's in the notebook"
Back to present day -- the woman on the phone told me that she would have done the same thing if it was her and she understands why I left and even applauded me for having the humility to admit I went about it wrong. We spoke for about 20 minutes, and she said she does have some say as to who is hired and she wants ME... and she is going to present my case to him in a way that tells him she would have done it too if it was her. She even said I was the best person who has walked through those doors.
We spoke a little longer and she told me she wants me... for sure... and he just needs to get over his little power trip and hire me back because HE needs me. He can't keep people. It turns out the girl he gave my hours to all those years ago robbed him blind after I quit!
I am not sure how I feel about going back there, but, it would be Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 5-11pm... it means I will lose some time with DD, about 6 hours a week, but I will still be there to get her from school and help with her homework before I would have to leave.
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

What a great story. I guess he will have to eat crow to hire you back as well. The hours sound pretty good and even though you will need to give up some DD time, it would help carry you and yours thru a rough patch.
Any word on the catering job?

Sounds like it would be a good arrangement overall...and sounds like a really neat lady you'd get to work with (good co-workers is such an important thing!).

LOL
what a great story!
i hope this job pulls through for you and is able to give a sense of stability in these somewhat chaotic times.
if nothing else, hold your head high when you go there and work.
just do your job, smile & be polite... and worry less about the boss' power trip.
it sure sounds like you'll have someone on your side!
good for you!

This made me laugh out loud. Good for you.
Good luck with going back there to work.
