OMG, My head hurts...
How in the heck are we going to afford to live in California?
Housing is so expensive. Homes look like $375-400,000 for 3 bed 2 bath and small square footage (1400-1600).
I don't even know yet what property taxes and insurance is and just the mortgage payment alone we can't do.
The base doesn't have any houses for my dh's rank. It's a 1 1/2 year wait. And they cannot even say *if* any house will be available for us (going into a rank below us's house).
We have no debt but our present mortgage and we wouldn't buy unless our current house is sold.
OMG, what the hell are we going to do?

could you rent your current house out, and get a rental there in CA until housing on post opens up?

I know it's the govt., but is there any way for a cost of living increase? Don't laugh too hard.

I'd rent a place. Military moves around so often that I wouldn't be trying to buy a house for each new location. DH was an AF brat, longest he lived anywhere was 6 years in Spain. Everything else was from 2-4 years. When he joined the Navy same deal, constant moving around. Just my 2

I feel for you....when my husband was in the military long, long ago we happened to find a "cheap" rental (we were VERY lucky"). When he got out we didn't stay in California ~ because although we loved it ~ we just couldn't afford it and knew we would never be able to afford a home of our own there. I wish you the best of luck in moving there.

If the difference between renting a place and a mortgage payment is only a few hundred dollars it won't make sense to rent due to the tax deduction a mortgage brings.

Paula,
As soon as you know what command your hubby is going to....get in contact with that command and contact the ombudsman, that person should be able to help you with a packet of information and give you insite to area stuff.
**No idea how many children you have but you may want to check the rentals on 2B/2B and see if that is any less money.
**You may want to rent for a few months anyway to get the lay of the land.

I'm so sorry
I know how stressful a PCS is.
Your BAH should be able to cover a rental place. Here's a BAH calculator http://perdiem.hqda.pentagon.mil/perdiem/bah.html
the zip code you'll use is 93438
The housing office should have a large selections of rental listings and be able to help you find a house within your BAH allowance.
