    Default So Annoying......

I think we can all agree that it is very annoying when cashiers offer you thier store credit cards as you pay for your purchase.....I was totally annoyed when I was in Kmart today and walked past an employee stocking shelves and she started in on me about getting a Sears card. I politely declined her three attempts and walked away. The guy that was behind was not nearly as nice to her. I found that to be incredibly tacky. In this age of people digging themselves deeper into debt and defaulting on thier loans, is it really necessary to offer us more credit cards at every turn?

    i agree!
i find it annoying as well.

but from a business stand-point, there's great money to be had buy people taking up these cards. And the initial incentives of "save 10% the first time!" (or more) usually get people to sign on.

It's all about the bottom dollar.

    YOUR bottom dollar!

Well--I agree that it is annoying and some people do it in a tacky manner. BUT they are doing their job (and most likely trying to keep it). I work retail and we do offer to take 10% off the first purchase to open a CC. I would NEVER in a million years open one because the interest rate is 24%. That's why almost every retail establishment offers them--it's big money for them. Now I know all this, I am kind (but firm)to people when they ask me to open an acct and I always keep in mind that these people are just trying to put food on their table.

I understand it is their job, but to keep nagging after you have declined gets me. My husband works part-time at Wal-mart and he refuses to offer their credit card. When the manager ask him why, he told them he couldn't enable people to get more into debt and he also thinks it rude to ask other customers to wait while he fills out a cc application for someone. They respected his point of view. Granted, not every employee could do this and get away with it. DH has worked there many years and is well liked. I just wish some of them would take no for an answer.

    Exactly!

I happen to be a new hire at Sears, and we are told we have to ask everyone... everyone... if they would like to open a credit line...

Do you think I want everyone to be in debt to their eyes? No...
Do I want to be able to keep the job I just got? Yes!

I am not going to get one, that's for sure. But, we do get a bonus for every sign-up, and we do have to explain to the manager why they don't want one.

I don't agree to people chasing you down waving credit applications at you or blocking the door until you agree to sign one... but asking "Would you like to put that on your Sears card today?" isn't harrassment. JMO
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

When I was a manager in retail sales every employee had a monthly quota of cc accounts to open. The quota wasn't just for cc applications, only approved new cc customers counted towards the quota. I hated it, all the other employees hated it, but it was part of the job. Between sales quotas and cc quotas it was an extremely stressful job.
