We've been to that area. About 3 years ago we went to the Black Hills of South Dakota. It was truly one of the most beautiful areas (IMO) I've ever been. We saw Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands and went to Deadwood. The Black Hills National Forest is beautiful. We really enjoyed that trip. On the way back home we drove through Wyoming to Colorado and the Rockies then back to Texas. I have Webshots pics of our trip if you'd like me to PM the link to you.

Make time! Don't rush this is a great area to spend time. Cody, Wy. has the Buffalo Bill Historical Center that shouldn't be missed this is 4 museums in one. Of course Yellowstone should be given plenty of time. Don't let the crowads in the summer trun you away the paint pots, gysers and boiling springs are breath taking in more ways than one. Sulfur fumes lol.
Don't bypass Wind Cave outside Custer S.D.
A hundred years ago when I was a kid we stayed in Custer and at a place called Triple T's which I'm sure is gone by now but it was front row for the beginning of an outdoor play called ,"The Hanging of Fly speck Billy." The local town actor did an open air theater which was wonderful. My mom found out about it by writing to the town Chamber well worth it.
See the film about Mt. Rushmore before you go to the monument, you'll learn lots of little things.
Ft. Laramie is an actual living history fort.
The Corn Palace in Mitchell S.D. is another sight to see.
Words of warning:
Buffalo are dangerous!
Pairie Dogs and Rattlesnakes share the same holes. Watch your step.
Even in the summer streams and rivers are cold take extra shoes and socks.
Don't feed the bears.

I have never been to any of those states, but we do know 2 different families that have moved to Montana. They love it!

We made the drive from Oregon to Mt. Rushmore last September. (DH and our best friends.) We took almost 3 wks and wandered home by way of Yellowstone for a week and then to a saphire mine in Montana.
There were many incredible moments, but the Flag Lighting Ceremony at Mt. Rushmore will always bring tears to my eyes. Go early and take it all in. There were mountain goats in the parking lot!!! The cutest little babies and adults. Scenic, peaceful, full of wildlife. I think it is a must see.
Yellowstone is always awesome. We take our mt. bikes and ride every where allowed and then hike as many trails as we can. It seems like there are over 2,000 miles of hiking trails in Yellowstone if I'm remembering correctly. Every year is just a little different in Yellowstone. 2 yrs ago we saw more elk than ever before, last year it was HUGE herds of Buffalo. Have you ever seen Buffalo snort and paw dirt and "head bang"???
Laurie--I never knew that rattlesnakes and prairie dogs shared holes--I truly hate snakes--(sorry to the snake lovers). Good think I didn't go check out any holes.
I'm forgetting tons of stuff but contact the Chamber of Commerace for each area/town you are visiting and have them send brouchers ofplaces of interest to you well before you go so you can plan a wonderful trip.Robin

Its a symbiotic relationship between the pairie dogs and snakes. The snake use the holes for shelter and the dogs as a heat source and in trade the snakes only eat the dogs when NOTHING eles is available. The snake also protects the dog as nothing wants to venture into the borrows with the snakes.
Learned this at a ranger talk around a camp fire.
