Good news - would like to share.
We got the greatest news yesterday and it is something that I didn't dare to hope for.
7 1/2 years ago my middle child - then 13 years old had a HUGE epileptic seizure. To cut a long story short a couple of days later we discovered that it was not a one-time thing but that he had epilepsy. What followed was 2 years of every epilepsy med. that there was and nothing worked.
We were transferred to the Dutch Epilepsy Foundation (for Dutch readers -SEIN) which has neurologists who are specialists in epilepsy. He was admitted to their clinic for 8 weeks for tests. They weaned him off all the meds. and put him on a new med. that was being introduced into Holland from the US.
He hasn't had a seizure since and that is more than 5 years ago.
Yesterday we were at the neurologist's office for a check up.
We had already been told that the type of epilepsy that he has can sometimes be triggered by a large growth spurt and that there was a chance that he could 'grow out of it'.
The last EEG only showed some light sensitivity but no signs of epileptic activity so MY SON IS ALLOWED TO SLOWLY STOP THE MEDS.
He still has four tablets per day at the moment. He is allowed to gradually stop with 2 of them (one at a time over a few weeks) and then wait a while and then again slowly stop the other two, one by one. By Oct/Dec. he should be off the meds. and if everything continues to go well, he will be declared CURED after 3 years.
I sobbed in the car on the way home yesterday - yes, tears of joy.
I could never have believed 7 years ago that this moment would come.
Yes, we had a small party yesterday evening.*Avril*
