HElP! I must not disapoint my dd
My dd is suppose to wear blue and gold to school on Friday. She just mentioned it as I was putting her to bed and I told her we didn't have anything gold and she would just have to wear all blue. She said I just have to go shopping. I told her that wasn't an option. Mommy doesn't have any money. In hind sight I wish I hadn't said that but whats done is done.
She looked like she was going to cry and she said she would just have to tell her teacher that" I can't dress up because I don't have any gold and mommy doesn't have any money, she will understand" That hurt so bad and I almost started crying. I told her not to worry mommy will make sure she has something gold.
So now here I am trying to figure out what to do. The only thing I can find gold is an old Halloween costume. The skirt is gold, its not much fabric but I just don't know what to do. It's maybe a 1/4 th a yard in total. Maybe I could sew a gold ruffle at the bottom of her uniform skirt. If I do I would have to remove it because she needs that skirt for school.
Any ideas out there?? I'm desperate and I can't let her down.

Ann, does it have to be clothing? Can she wear blue but maybe you could find and inexpensive gold headband or scarf to tie around her waist or use as a head band.
I know that schools like to foster spirit and community but it is really unfair to the kids whose parents can't just pop out and buy an article of clothing on a moments notice.
Too bad schools couldn't come up with a list at the beginning of school of the year's activities and what it is the parents are asked to provide.Last edited by LuvMyHubby; 04-02-2008 at 09:03 PM. Reason: add word gold

I think your idea sounds great! Is there enough for a gold sash? Maybe a gold cloth headband? A gold bow for her hair? A scarf?

I like the ruffle idea, just because it's funky (in a good way of course!) and it's something no one else will probably have. The ribbon or hairbow idea is also a good one. Good luck. Let us know what you decided!

Is there enough fabric for a gold vest? I don't even know if vests are "cool" anymore. I also think maybe making the fabric into a ribbon to tie around her waist and if you have enough, maybe a ribbon for her hair. A can of inexpensive gold spray paint and a pair of your daughter's old shoes? You shouldn't feel bad, you are getting creative and it's only for one day. Whatever you come up with that's gold will work, and your daughter will be happy with it. Good luck, and let us know what you decided to make.

Oh, I like the shoe idea. Particularly if she has a pair of white shoes that are pretty much on their way out anyway. Some pretty gold paint would work nicely.
If she is wearing a skirt or dress some pretty gold tights would work. Do they even make them in gold??? Boy, I am sooooooooo out of the loop in kids clothing.

I like the idea about the ruffle or even wearing a gold ribbon in her hair with a blue outfit. I think that would be really cute and would fit with the "blue and gold" theme. What about Christmas ribbon? Do you have any gold ribbon left that you can incorporate into her outfit? Maybe a belt that you can spraypaint gold?

Ann,
Do you have any gold rik rak in your sewing box??? Well if not could you use the gold fabric in small strips to sew a small band around the neck, sleeves and bottom of a blue t-shirt.
Just an idea : )

I like the gold headband idea and if there is any left you can sew a belt to go around her waist but on top of her shirt. Let us know what you come up with.

Why not just wear something yellow. I know when some people say blue and gold, the gold is more like a yellow.

how about...
Got to love last minute 'tag days'. DD is in private school and they always have something or other that they have to wear once a month or so (other than the uniform).
She did have a blue & gold day too (school colors). What I did is let her wear her jeans, gym hoodie (blue with gold letters), yellow (goldish) hair scrunchie as a 'bracelet' and yellow socks.
Nothing says she has to be dressed to the hilt, just show school spirit.
If she has long hair, how about braiding her hair with blue & gold ribbons? If it's short, wrapping blue & gold ribbons around a headband.
If there is a thrift store or child's secondhand shop local to you, you may want to pop in. DD's school is associated with a church. The church has a thrift shop open one day a week. They do sell the uniforms and gym clothes the other kids have outgrown.
Don't beat yourself up... I've made the 'momma can't afford that' slip too, and DD spent the next week looking for pennies to help pay for whatever I said I didn't have the money for. I wanted to cry too, but then it made me proud.
On the flip side, DD's teacher did call me 2 weeks ago because she knows we are currently on reduced lunch and DD has a field trip coming up and DD kept trying to give the permission slip back because she didn't think we could afford it. THAT made me cry. I assured the teacher that my DD will be able to go and I had a snuggle-time talk with DD that night.
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

Lady V your permission slip story made me cry. I can almost see my dd doing the same thing. They go on a field trip once a month and I complained about the one I had to send money for this week.
I actually came up with a pretty cool idea , I working on it right now and I'll post a pick when I am done.

Take a peek
I am not done yet but this is what I came up with. Im going to make a a matching hair band and a belt. I bet she is the best dressed ! The shirt is navy blue and so are the buttons on the gold flowers, it was hard to get the colors to show nice in the pictures.
