Why it pays to have homeowners' insurance!
A couple of weeks ago we had golf ball-sized hail, which caused a lot of damage in our area. On Saturday the adjuster made it to our house.
Yesterday, we received a check from the insurance company for almost $9600!
The roof was considered totalled (there were holes in it)...it is only 6 months old! That was $4000 for getting that fixed...the carport was considered totalled (adding another $2500), although it is structurally still sound, it just has a lot of dings in it. The awning over our front door, totalled. The awning over the back patio totalled (we were going to take it down anyway), the shed in the back yard totalled, and some $ to get the windows (they totalled 3, but the 3rd one is very minor), some siding and some guttering and fascia replaced.
The only downdraw is that the check is made out to dh and the mortgage company (our local bank). We have to get the money from them to have things repaired. If there is quite a bit of $ leftover, it goes towards the mortgage--a minor amount, it gets refunded to us.
We are proposing to the bank that we have the roof repaired, but leave the carport and take the money we would have spent there and put it towards a new shed (which they didn't give us as much for as we expected). We'll have the windows fixed, of course, since they are broken, the siding, and the guttering. We're not sure what we are going to do to the awning over the front porch, but we are going to pull down the awning out back, since it looks like swiss cheese on the western side. We'll see what happens there.
We were pleasantly surprised to get compensated so well and so quickly.
The adjuster said that he is working 12 hour days right now, six days a week.

We have Southern Farm Bureau...also have them for life insurance and the cars too.
It sounded like a baseball team having batting practice on our house! Funny thing is, the oldest dc (almost 10) is the only one who was upset by it...Steven was like 'whatever' and the 3 y.o. and the baby slept right through it all.
