    Default Water Barrell- Lesson Taught

Yesterdy we set up our new rain barrell. Today it rained, and it's almost full!!
The neighbors 4 grandkids came over today (to get something that went over the fence). They asked what it was. I told them. So they said, why? water comes from the faucet. I explained that my flowers and garden, do better with rain - which is God's water. I can water from the faucet, but it's not the same. Their response was "How cool". I showed them how it worked, and they thought it was so neat.
Next the little one says "how old are you?". I say, "old enough". He asks again "how old are you?" I say " old enough to know you don't ask that question". Again how old? The little girl says "I know". So I asked her what she thought, and she says "30!" I had to smile, and said "that's right". She was so excited. (I failed to say plus 23).
So I gave a lesson on rain barrells, and got a lesson myself.
    Kids are so funny!

How adorable. Kids definitely do say the darnedest things.

It was nice that they got to learn a little bit about the rain barrel as well!

I want to make a rain barrel but can't afford to buy one. We are making a compost bin out of an old metal trash can - hopefully today or tomorrow.

If I can find a plastic one, I will use it for rain. I'm thinking of finding any unused 5 gallon buckets and just sit them around the garden for rain.

    Any other ideas?? Free ones?

Yes I'm out of my mind. It's a dark and scary place in there.

The kids were 7, 9, 10, and 11. They are so inquisitive. We live in the suburbs and they had never seen anything like that. Rain is rain, and water for everything comes from the faucet. The youngest and the oldest have been around us since they were babies. The oldest has even asked if he can call us aunt and uncle. They are so sweet.
We have talks as often as possible about different things. Their parents aren't the greatest. Grandpa and grandma do what they can too. Maybe we can all make a positive impact on them, so that they see people care.

I read (somewhere) of someone making a rain barrel from a free plastic food barrel. I think they got it from a cafeteria or food coop?

Dunno. But those barrels (50 gallon?) are huge, and obviously the plastic is food safe!

    I hope this helps!

DH and I made a compost bin out of 4 pallets held together like a cube with or without a bottom.
The pallets were free because we got them in back of a store (asked first).

I also found a 55 gallon plastic barrell on craigs list for $8.It was a food distribution place that had 100's of them.
All the parts for the rain barrel were less than $10.

Look around you might find one in your area rather cheap too.

WOW thanks everyone. I'm going to print out that make your own barrel pdf. I have been looking around but I will try to contact some local companies and see if there is anything they can give me or sell me cheaply.
